I saw this site today and it got me thinking. If a company like microsoft is selling a thousand dollar product to students for 75$, aka peanuts, they must be hella scared about priacy. I mean why else would they do it? Is piracy finally beating the big dudes?
Theft is theft eh? Greed is also a sin. Pop stars do not deserve 20 million dollars a year for dancing and singing. And the only reason they make the money is because they focus on selling CDs. Major media corporations puts our crap music, crap movies, and expects us to pay 20 bucks a pop for them. Ridiculous. If I see a movie that I deem worthy, I will pay for a movie ticket, or actually buy the DVD. Otherwise, I take it for free. Same goes for music. Is it theft? Well, do I really care that I am balancing out an unjust capital system, where people who save lives make millions upon millions less than a slut who dances on a stage? It isn't theft. It is justice in it's purest form.
I use torrents to seed open source (or free to the general public) programs and operating systems. Right now I have about 10 torrents running and every single one is legal. Including NetBSD, OpenBSD, many Linux distro's, etc. Torrents aren't always pirate products.
***Whatever helps you sleep at night instead of integrity.*** Antiquated notions of integrity bear no relevance to a society where the spiteful, manipulative, and greedy profit from human suffering. Record companies no longer focus on artists creating music. They have raped the art of music, and whore it out to SELL cd's. No longer is any skill required to be a musician. It's ALL about being a marketable product. Look at Britney Spears. She has no singing talent, nor dancing talent, nor artistic talent. Her company fabricated her, completely. They use studio magic to force her voice on key, they overlay filter upon filter until it is no longer even human. They spend millions of dollars paying professional dancers to teach her choreography, and they have teams of "professional" writers creating her lyrics and music. She is nothing more than a tool. And like any tool, when it has been used, it is thrown out for the newest model. And sadly for Britney, that is precisely what has happened to her. Do I feel sorry for her? Well, if somebody shoots them self in their own foot, do they deserve sympathy? What about if they teach little girls everywhere how to shoot themselves in their own foot. Do they deserve sympathy for polluting young minds to make a profit? No. They deserve destruction. Is abiding by an unjust law a symbol of integrity? Is supporting and upholding an unjust system considered admirable? Is it a sign of moral decline if somebody stands by their convictions, rather than lay down their arms? No. Piracy isn't just about getting stuff for free. It is about removing the power and influence from people who would exploit th innocent for personal gain. It is about forcing balance into an unbalanced economy. It is about placing power in the hands of the common man, instead of the hands of the elite. I support that which I believe in. I fight to the death against all else.
Piracy works for Microsoft's advantage and they have admitted it, if it wasnt fir piracy no-one in the third world could afford using their over priced bloated systems , but thanks to piracy ,the Chinese , Indians and Africans are using Microsoft exclusively instead of developing their own or using Open Source alternatives. Piracy also helps dumbing down the music industry, since music can be freely shared , small scale artists cannot make enough money and so record companies are less likely to invest in them, for Britney Spears it doesn't matter ,she will make enough money anyway. This is at least the situation in poo countries. My friend is a Chinese rock and roll artist , but he cannot afford to prduce an album cause the moment its out everybody shares it in torrents . the record companies only invest in 'idol' type artist.
I think if a good product is sold at a fair price then people will buy it. Like this Office deal, 75 for Ultimate, I think that is fair enough and I bought a copy. As for my own use of piracy, I guess I can justify it differently depending on the thing I pirate. I think Argon is right about commercial music. Indie music benefits from piracy because people try before they buy, they get exposure etc. Some TV shows are so delayed in Australia that I have no choice to download them (eg BSG), some aren't on TV or DVD (eg Adult Swim cartoons).
Hooray and be thankful for the good folks like Sitka. Capitalism needs and depends on them. Everyone else:: Enjoy.
If you gave me Microsoft Office for free I wouldn't install it even if I could. I can't stand that hog of a program. It isn't piracy killing that crap-factory. It's open source coming out with better stuff faster. If your overpriced bloated system can't even keep up with the freebies you aren't going to stay on top long. They have to drop their prices to rock bottom just to sell the garbage. ArgonMatrix; You're slightly off. Your singing dancing slut is making money by dancing on stage, yes. She isn't making hardly any money by singing her whore-music in a recording studio. That's merely a way of advertisement and getting cheap music to the masses. Truthfully I think if you make good buisiness moves you deserve a good profit. Concert tickets aren't cheap and the band gets a percentage. That's fair. The problem comes in when twisted recording studios get involved. They take advantage of the flaws in the justice system and make a fortune.
I would agree with concert tickets making real money but not 100% on the recording studio and Justice system stuff.
Corporations are not people, and do not deserve a 'right' to property (not that that 'right' really stands much for people either). Therefore, it is not theft. Furthermore, data can only be stolen if someone loses the data. Copying is not theft. It is reproduction. They have lost nothing. If I was going to buy something, I would've bought it. What I've downloaded, I was either going to download or I wasn't going to have. Either way, they weren't going to get my money.
information is supposed to be free. this idea that information = profit is part of why society is so broken trying to prove that you really love an artist or a scene by shouting their mpaa, riaa slogans wherever you go makes you a puppet, and nothing more. examine what you are saying, without soundbites weighing as arguments.
No they are selling a 10$ product that they charge a thousand so they can market down so you fell like your not taking it up the ass. God I hope piracy is winning
