I've been thinkin about dreadlocks. My mom is totally against the idea of it, but that's not really slowing me down. First, I'm really clueless about the whole gettin them, maintaining them stuff, I've been reading up- but ya know how that goes. Second, I have real thin hair and it's really long. well there's some pictures. so I'm just wondering if y'all think I'd be right to sport the dread look. lol. And if ya got any tips about the whole process. comments, ya know--that kinda thing. thanks. [=
You can pull it off. I'm not sure how much you have read so I don't know how much I should put in, but here it goes: You can: a. Go all natural, wash your hair with residue free soap (Dr bronners works well) and do nothing to your hair. Nope, not even comb it and with time your hair will start locking up. b. Back comb it, section it out so that you have a general idea of how your dread locks will look and how big you want them to be. (a quick vid i found on the back combing process https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlbrKkYDB-M ignore the products he is using) c. Crocheting in order to maintain, simply palm roll after you wake up/showers and also look into "twist and rip". Wash your hair once every 5/6 days with residue free soap for the initial phase if you decided to back comb, so that they do not fall out while you are in the shower. Do not use conditioners/comb.
The first thing you need to know is DO NOT use products like wax etc... Other than that just section and backcomb. My hair was really thin and smooth but its been about 2 months now and the body of the dread is getting pretty tight. Go to dreadheadhq.com and use their method but none of their products. Thats what I did any way.
thanks guys. and thanks for the link to the video. I'm thinkin I'll go to this organic shop in cookeville and get some good shampoo and get started on it.
Oh, your hair is very pretty! But yes, dreads would look great on you. No wax, I guess... radio and gimped pretty much covered a lot.... Oh, and beads are cool! They help I think... Not to mention a wool hat to wear around should help.
I definetly would say get bronners. I use Dr. Bronners peppermint soap and helps my hair knot up wonderfully. Also keeps my hair smelling soo clean and fresh. I get mine at whole foods, if you have one of those around.
dreadlocks look good on anyone! just read up to find all the information you need....also check out this site for a lot of useful info: www.knottylocks.tk
Knotty Boy has some good info in their videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Q1HPiEjrpk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iU_3ttSOOb4&feature=related I thought the sectioning bit was very helpful. As stated above, don't use the wax. I think the cons significantly outweigh the pros. Now one thing that seems pretty uncommon is braiding. I've seen it on a few sites, but not many. All you do is braid it and palmroll once in a while. I wonder how good that works.. [edit] Also the size of the dreads will change. If you take a section of hair and twist it, the dreadlock will be somewhere between the size of the twist and the size of the section. It may seem obvious to some, but it's still good to know if you have thin hair. It would suck to think they would be too small and end up making them huge. [/edit]
^backcombing or whatever is one method....another is just letting it lock naturally, which I recommend. Just be sure to read up a lot and make sure what you want before you start.
thanks a lot guys. I appreciate it. I think I'm gonna do it natural. I'm afraid my school will like, yell at me about it. rule "Hair must be neat and tidy and if dyed, a natural color" dumb, I know. but thanks guys. [=
claim religios freedom and the school cannot tell you how to wear your hair that doesnt mean you need to claim to be rasta or anything it only means to claom a spiritual connection to dreading your hair im glad to hear your going natural, it will look amazing the info in the sticky (dreadlock truth) should help and any questions ya may have just ask enjoy the journey
