Rock and Roll died quite a while ago.. but the mainstream didn't care because they had their rap/hiphop/pop/crap/whatever. To quote jack Black "The Man ruined it with a little thing called MTV!"

Please because that's not the only rock being made nowadays, so it isn't dead at all. But since you use the tv like a reliable source for your wellfounded opinion wether oldfashioned good rock is dead or not it's dead in you indeed. Your loss!

It's dead in the mainstream perhaps. I don't see good rock 'n roll there neither. But is rock 'n roll dead because it isn't popular with the masses anymore? When it still fills halls with rock 'n rollloving people? It could be dead, I'd say it's dead when it's only in our hearts and on mp3's and compact discs. But it isn't, because it's still being made. Massmedia just don't want it anymore. Not really a bad thing in my opinion, except when you're lazy. What the heck, I'm lazy too, but I still have the urge to listen to the latest rock albums. And I'm not talking about Franz Ferdinand, Marilyn Manson or Snow patrol and whatever insults of good rock there is. Not talking about the old people of the first wave of rock neither, although I had a great time at the Riders on the storm concert :). I wanna see pure rock played by young people as well and well, it's all there man. You just don't want to know about it because it's 'modern' a.k.a. made in the 21st century. Boo you, prejudiced 'rockers'!

Yeah... For fact I barely watch T.V.. If I do it has nothing to do with Modern Rock... I just hate Modern Rock... Some Modern stuff I like... Like Dylan's New Stuff (More Country/Folk/Rock) and Cake. But... I guess in youre case I have to say "In My Opinion----

What am I saying... Your theory is retarted Rock `n Roll SUCKS now it all DIED! It was good in the 90's... Yeah I like cake and The NEw Dylan... But seriously... Bowie turned Techno and Young turned on the President! What IS left?! Seriously Think about it!

Don't think about it and say it's dead. You better look for it. Of course it's also a matter of personal taste, my friend, that's true. But it isn't dead when it just isn't in your face anymore.
I can't define Cake and Bob Dylan as rock as in rock 'n roll by the way, however I love Dylan too he isn't part of todays rock 'n roll scene. Cake just is a perfect example of how rock has changed through the decades and got more facets. I'm not really into them but I guess they're not bad..

Nothing new is being written? In the (small) world you guys are living in maybe. Ah well, I guess you're right, isn't nostalgia is the best feeling you can have when listening to music. Why bother about todays rock 'n roll, right? Makes sense in a way, you all want to live in the sixties as well.

Rock is alive, and who thinks otherwise just hasn't been looking. People who can't look beyond 60s and 70s music are simply pathetic. Educate yourselves.

Ok this post is very old but... man even if it's your opinion if rock n roll died in 73... you said it died when disco appear... but really the disco movement appear as a musical force in 1975 not really before... and only in 1976 disco became this big fat movement... the big reign of disco is from 1976 to 1981...

Personally i don't think that disco killed rock n roll... in 76 and 77 there a lot of good or even great records of rock (n' roll)!
Ok i see all this from another summit...another point of vue...

because a lot of bands were voting for reagan (check the horrible 80s patriotic republican return of Grand Funk in 83)

it was the beginning of the reign of the video (until now)... and the production was not natural... with those plastic drums...we're millions miles away of tribal natural sound of drums...
The lyrics of plenty of bands became more simple less poetic... etc...etc...
naturally there's exception ...and we found even good records with "synthetic drums" etc...etc... but i think that it' was a "planet of the ape" (those desert scenes) age for rock n roll...

    Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
    There's more to the picture
    Than meets the eye.
    Hey hey, my my.

Out of the blue and into the black
You pay for this, but they give you that
And once you're gone, you can't come back
When you're out of the blue and into the black.

The king is gone but he's not forgotten
Is this the story of johnny rotten?
It's better to burn out 'cause rust never sleeps
The king is gone but he's not forgotten.

    Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
    There's more to the picture
    Than meets the eye.

    Neil Young

    Thats the answer!!!
