For those of you who have taken up glass blowing as a hobby. How and where did you learn? What type of equipment do you use? I'm interested in taking up glassblowing and i would just like to know how and where to get started with it.

i just grabbed a couple books, torch, kiln, controller and locked myself in the studio for a few years...as far as glass beadmaking goes, "Making Glass Beads" by Cindy Jenkins was a great introduction and guide to putting a studio together

    a basic kiln...maybe $300...
    low-end torch $200ish....
oxy tank $5-$20/ month rental + 20-30 to get it filled
a few hand tools maybe $100 to start
propane tank $12-$18 per refill (surely you can find a tank)

    that would get you started

Or you could go with a hot head and a fiber blanket with soft glass for alot cheaper introduction

holy shit. I have no idea where to get started with buying glass products. There are soo many choices. i was thinking of getting one of the starter kits just to get a little familiar. But i also need to buy a torch, and i dont even know where to begin with that.

i would start with this kit, it comes with the hothead torch:

btw, you really need an annealing oven if you plan on selling your beads...glass that is cooled in a fiber blanket and not properly annealed isnt very durable...even if it survives the initial cooling, it will always contain stress and may crack next week or next month...

Glass Blowing does sound real cool, I'd be scared to work with that hot of glass though, i can't even use a hot glue gun without burning myself so i dont even wanna know what whould happen if i burnt myself with a glass blower?

I spent a week making things with glass, mostly kiln work, but one day we did torch stuff.
I didn't get much done, I was too busy experimenting with the glass, it was SO much fun
I only did it for a day... I really really liked it, I'm thinking of doing some glasswork when I'm older, I'll probably already be selling some paintings, so why not glass.

To get the rods, kiln, supplies, torch, everything I needed to start, it cost like, $700
less that 1000... It's just a matter of making stuff that's good enough to be sold.
i'm not too big on glass blowing, just sculpting.

    I made this little horsey:

the back needs to be carves away a bit. But I still like it.

You might be able to find a class at like a community college or something, non-credit. The class might be kinda expensive but it will be easier to learn that way with all the equipment and stuff. I definitely wanna do that... glass blowing is really cool!
