I found a copy of Windows XP I burned as a back-up when I used to have my desktop, and I wanted to install it onto my laptop which has Vista ATM. However, when I click "setup", it opens to the setup page and the option "Install Windows XP" is grayed-out, and I am unable to click it. Is this because Vista isn't letting itself downgrade? Help is appreciated and please people dont make this into another Vista .vs. XP thread, they both have their ups and downs and I dont really care about hearing them all AGAIN
I haven't heard of actually downgrading from Vista unless it was originally XP. Can you boot from that disc? It may require you to re-burn it as an image.
If you're going to the trouble of reinstalling, also go to the trouble of deep deleting the hard drive with a program like Killdisk. This takes the HD down to it's factory fresh state. There is a possibility you may not have the setup files on your XP disk. If not , you need to download the 6 floppy disks needed for a boot install. x
easy... make sure you have your cdrom as the first boot device (or before a hard drive boot). reboot the computer with the cdrom in the drive and just hit a key when it asks to boot from cdrom drive. 1. delete vista partition 2. format free space with chosen file system 3. install xp 4. ??? 5. PROFIT!
