Good picture opportunities on Victoria...

My boyfriend and I (along with the whole damn family) are going on a cruise to Alaska this saturday and we're stopping in Victoria. I was hoping that I could get some ideas of places and things that we should stop to take pictures of that the cruise line won't tell us about. I'm looking for something unique... something that we don't see everyday. I consider this cruise a once in a life time opportunity and I want to capture little details that most people miss to enhance my photography portfolio. I just want some damn good pics and I don't know where to start. please help!

 

Well, I'm assuming you will be on the same cruise as the other poster here? Regardless, Victoria has some pretty incredible photography opportunities.

One of the first and most obvious things to capture will be the Parliament building and the Empress Hotel. You will know what I mean when you see them. There is a large totem pole on the corner of Belleville and Douglas (a block east of the inner harbour) that you may want to check out. Beacon Hill Park is worth a visit. Craigdarroch Castle and Government House are also worth checking out for pictures. I don't know about evening or night time, but if you head over to Fisherman's Wharf they have seals that tend to stick around (waiting to be fed, no less), so you might be able to get pics of them. If you're really lucky, you can get a picture of a seagull snatching strips of fish from someone's hand as they try to feed the seals. Those birds have learned to be pretty gutsy. The entrance to China town is kind of neat. If somehow you can make it out to Butchart Gardens (not too likely if you are like the other poster and will only be here for a few hours) there are tons of photo opportunities. Other than that a lot of it is just paying attention to the plant and animal life here. We have some strange plants that I've never seen elsewhere (but then again, I've been pretty sheltered).

Find Bean Around the World coffeeshop in Chinatown. Just down the block is Fan Tan Alley. A great scene for photos.

 

Just walk around Downtown, it'll take you hours to photograph everything you want to.

When will you be here?

I'm going to Tall Ships now.

 

well guys... we're back from the cruise. it was amazing. we were in Victoria on the 5th. it was amazing. i'll have to put some pics up to show you what i got to see. i want to live there!
