I'm not supposed to wash my hair for another week or 2, as long as I can stand it. That's all fine and dandy, but my scalp is driving me nuts. At first I was using sea breeze and cotton balls, and that irritated my scalp. So then I had my husband rub between the dread sections on my scalp with a wet washcloth (just water) and then use a q-tip to apply straight tea tree oil on the "grid" of my scalp. AHHHHH that felt so good, and it kept my head from itching so bad for about 3 or 4 days. However, it's itchy again, and in scratching my scalp today I notice there is quite the build up of sebum and whatnot, chunks even. EW. I'd like to actually CLEAN my scalp with soap and water, but I am not sure how to do it without getting the rest of my hair wet. I thought about getting a small bowl of soapy hot water, the soap being dr. bronner's, and having hubby wring a wash cloth in that and rub my head all over. But I think that would end up with a thin layer of soap on my scalp which probably isn't good. It'd be kinda hard to get it all off my scalp, even if he used a plain wet washcloth afterwards, wouldn't it? Any ideas? Should I just stick with the plain water wet washcloths and tea tree oil chasers?
Why aren't you ment to wash your hair? Dreads don't form in oily hair. Not to mention they start to stink if you don't wash them. Wash your hair.
why can't you wash for another week or two? i washed 4 days after i backcombed, and they got tighter. i wash every 2-4 days now, and sometimes two or three days in a row if i get sweaty. my dreads are only 5 weeks old, and washing them hasn't done anything bad to them. just don't use a TON of shampoo (i use dr. bronners peppermint diluted with a dash of tea tree oil) and you'll be fine
It's what the lady who put my dreads in for me told me to do. She has her method all her own, using her homemade goop that is supposed to help them dread and eventually wear off (no wax - completely water soluble). I figured I would be no worse for the wear, so I did as she said. So far I am starting to see what she meant... they ARE slowly locking up as the goop wears off and I can see how getting them wet too soon would make them get messed up. This particular process is apparently a little different than what most people do when starting dreads. Either way, I just don't want to take the risk, and besides if it IS hindering the dreading process, so what I have to wait another month or two longer, not a big deal. So I'd prefer not to get them wet if I can help it, just to see what happens and how it goes. In the meantime I do want to wash my scalp, though.
all i can think of is, for the time just apply a drop of bronners into a little cup and put some water in it, and then add some tea tree oil. And just do the q-tip thing thatyou were talking about. but i think i would wash before you get to two weeks. thats a while, and could probably do some nasty things to your scalp
if you're head is itching, why not just wash it? I just get my head wet everytime it starts to itch and it makes it feel so much better.
