He and his ilk helped build the legend of Al Qaeda, not sure about Al Qauida. It only exists in the minds of those using it as the great world boogeyman.

To me Al-Qaeda (the base) is not exactly an organization but more of an ideology or movement.

In more secular terms it is like an extremist revolutionary philosophy that believes acts of violence can wake up the ‘people’ or otherwise contribute to their goals.

Al-Qaeda seems to have taken Islamic ideas and viewed them in a certain way just as Baader-Meinhoff or the Red Brigade did with communism ideas.

And just as it suited certain people to claim that all such groups were under the control of soviet Russia because it advanced their own agenda (see The Power of Nightmares by Adam Curtis) so it suits others today to claim Al-Qaeda was invented, helped or controlled by someone or something (The CIA, Saddam, Israel) because they hope it will further their agenda.

The thing is that such philosophies can thrive anywhere if the conditions are right.

So it seems to me that the best way to tackle it is to address the shortfalls of the philosophy and see to it the conditions never reach that point.

Limbaugh does all he can to ensure that terrorist attacks are effective in what they're intended for- to terrify people. That makes him an "enemy combatant," IMO.

Exactly, and how we behaved after 09/11 was exactly the wrong thing to do. At a time when the world was with us we chose to alienate not just the Muslim world but France, Germany and Russia as well, but we are told by the media that Bush handled it well?

What did we accomplish, we've impoverished the US economics through an ever increasingly parasitic unnecessary war, we never questioned the Saudi connection, we alienated allies that for centuries have seen to our backs, we allowed barbaric executions, and are ourselves participating in torture and the unreasonable imprisonment of people without due recourse. At the same time we watched as our poor died and washed away during Katrina. But we are supposed to be spreading democracy throughout the world? We allow compromised goods to be sold to our populace, we still face an ongoing onslaught of illegal immigration, after we've been attack on our own soil, but we are supposed to feel safer?

We never solved who sent the anthrax? We never dealt with the fact that the majority of the hijackers were Saudis, but we are now providing that they get enriched uranium, while we threaten war with yet another country for doing the same thing?
