This is an old article, I know, but I've been wondering if the Greenbacks are going to be drastically altered or changed because of this ruling. http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/05/20/america/blind.php
You have to ask yourself, why would anyone want to alter something that is worthless from the get go? It has nothing to back it up. Seriously. It's nothing but air. I, on the other hand would invent a wallet that audibly reads denominations of bills as they're pulled out, thereby making myself millions. If, I were a capitalist. Fortunately, I'm a yogi. Ya'll can take that idea and run with it if you want to. Help the blind. x
I'm glad you feel that money is worthless. Since you think your money is worthless, I would like to take it off your hands. PM me for a mailing address, CASH only!
What makes it worthless? What currency is backed up by (gold)? The Gold Standard is not currently used by ANY Government.
Does anyone think that the Greenbacks will be totally changed? Perhaps Lincoln will be all in blue, and Franklin all in red? I'm wondering if it's possible that the public will be consulted in the new layout for a modern look to the bills.
Those who control the world's money supply wouldn't have it any other way. All we have in currancy value is Uncle Sam's word, and that ain't what it used to be. Another problem is our movement towards a cashless society, most of which is a product of private banks rather than the government. Our money supply is slowly being tranferred from government control to corporate control. Bad moon rising, me thinks. x
The dollar may still be around, but it will be so worthless that nobody will want to use it. A standardized 'North American' currency will take its place and will be shared by the US, Canada and Mexico. This is to be modeled after the Euro.
Oh, I see. Lets hope they just phase it out, eventually, then. Lets hope when that happens (New standardised 'North American' currency), they make the notes different sizes. Or atleast tackle this issue in some way. Might as well, while they are starting afresh, right?
It's interesting how this automatically turned to a discussion of money. It's always funny when someone calls it "worthless"... I think I've been getting my money's worth in this word. Fresh mango for paper? How much more awesome does it honestly get? This debate should go back to the original point though... Yet, honestly... I don't think that many people actually care about the blind. I'll be honest and say that I couldn't care less about blind people. Sucks for them. I know an old blind stoner though... gonna make that guy take acid one sunny day. The rest of them just seem like regular people... regular people with dangerously well developed senses of smell, touch, taste, and hearing. We need to take them out before they take us out.
Well, some people are visually impaired. They retain some vision, and can differentiate between colours. I hate digging around for American bills. I can open up my wallet and count how much money I have just by looking at the Canadian bill colours - but with American money, I have to count it all out to see how much I have. It's so tedious to count out $1 bills each time you go to pay for something. I would assume that people who need glasses or just by mistake hand over a $10 instead of a $5 all of the time - and don't notice the incorrect change they were given because they couldn't associate a colour to the monetary value of the bill. Anyway, it makes sense to have colours.
My mother was legally blind for the last ten years of her life. We dealt with the issue while still giving her some individual independence, by always placing certain denominations in certain places in her wallet. Of course she had trusted family to keep her organized. I think applying some sort of embossed id on each bill would be a reasonably cheap and useful solution. On a slightly off topic bent. I was in a store the other day, the clerk was young, she was given a silver certificate and didn't want to accept it from the purchaser she thought it looked funny. I offered to buy it from the purchaser and all of sudden the manager was called and they decided to accept the silver certificate. What you want to bet that it was later sold by someone in that store on ebay for more than face value.
Obligation The obligation of a certificate states how much of a specific commodity the government of a country will "pay to the bearer." On most large-size Silver Certificates, the obligation reads: "This certifies that there have/has been deposited in the Treasury of the United States of America (number) silver dollar(s) payable to the bearer on demand." On small-sized Silver Certificates beginning with Series 1934, in order to denote current location of deposit, it was changed to read: "This certifies that there is on deposit in the Treasury of the United States of America (number) dollar(s) in silver payable to the bearer on demand." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_Certificate
