I am reading this book right now. After I finish, I am going to try to find Into the Wild.

I enjoy Jon's style of writing, and he doesn't forget detail. Anyone ever read anything by him?

Yes, I have read both of those, and Eiger Dreams, all good reads. I think that Eiger Dreams tells of his solo attempt of the Devil's Thumb in Alaska, if not, that is a story worth reading too. Into the Wild is very fascinating, yet tragic. I went through a mountaineering book phase and have read easily 100 of them. Into Thin Air is one of the best, but for that 'can't put it down' quality, the best one is 'Touching the Void' by Joe Simpson. A gripping, award-winning book.
There are so many others, I won't start.

Hmm...Into Thin Air sounds *so* fimiliar, I think I read it a *long* time ago. If not, it definently sounds like somethig I should check out. :p But I'm pretty sure I've already read it. I should find a copy and look at the cover and such...but anyway...the other books you guys have mentioned sound pretty groovy too. I love books about nature, people's experience in nature, etc. :) Peace!

Into the Wild was a great book. Krakauer writes in such a way that I can't put them down. The story is really interesting too, which helps.

So there's a book called Touching the Void? I saw the movie and it blew me away, one of the best stories I've ever heard, and it's amazing that it isn't fiction!

I love krackauers writing. I have read Into Thin Air, Into the Wild, and Under the Banner of Heaven. I thought Into the Wild was the best of the three, maybe just because I'm not a mountain climber and not into Mormon fundamentalism.

Into Thin Air was the most compelling book I have ever read...and I'm not into mountaineering. I highly recommend Into the Wild and Under the Banner of Heaven. The guy in Into the Wild had the right idea, but he was his own worst enemy. Under the Banner got a little bogged down in Mormon history I think, but overall it was very interesting. Those fundamentalists are seriously wacked.

My fourth grade teacher made me read Into the Wild, and I really hated it then.... it grossed me out. I would probably appreciate it more now, but I don't have time to read. :(

I read it about a year and a half ago if I recall... very good book. I saw the movie as well which seemed a bit more picturesque... I had never seen many pictures of Everest aside from the Hillary Step area and base camp...
