I don't sense that the ego is creating room next to itself. Are there two of me? :) We may be using the word "ego" in different ways here. When I speak of ego I'm referring to identification with a personal sense of "me"... the little self that is the form identity.

Sorry, but my ego isn't at all impressed by what it sees from the higher self... instead it is threatened and fearful and does everything in its power to keep my attention on it (ego). The ego is not the willing servant... I am. The human face is simply the form of "I". This form doesn't have a sense of a personal self.

In any given moment, either I am present or I am not.

Who am I, then? Good question. As Hafiz put it, "I am a hole in a flute that the Christ's breath moves through- listen to the music."

Hey neodude, just as a suggestion, if you have that kind of experience again, pay close attention to the subtle messages that the ego gives you... like "you can't resist me", "I'm stronger", "the only thing you can do is give control back to me", etc.

Another thing that comes up is thinking there's something you have to do about it. That is VERY tempting and conditioned thinking. The opposite is actually true... there's nothing to do but only to observe. Observe what the ego is doing, how strong it seems, how crazy and drama-filled. And see if you can bring acceptance of whatever and however it is happening in the moment. Just giving it space to be, completely... that is transforming.

So there's all this noise and chaos in me? Well ok, let it be there. I accept it fully. I offer no resistance. (This is not the same as giving in out of a sense of weakness). You're simply the objective observer of the noise.

Sometimes we can only bring acceptance in after the fact. But as we practice this, it happens more quickly and easily, sometimes right in the middle of the ego noise, and then before it even has a chance to build momentum.

Ego is that which is created when one identifies with the thoughts of 'Me' 'My' and 'Mine'. They create the individual identity which is seemingly real, but is actually rather just another thought arising in this (moment), not separate from it.

    'I am Mr Smith.'

What he means is that by expressing that you are actually "Mr. Smith", you layer the true self with a shell of ego. You are not Mr. Smith (well, an example; in place use your real name), Mr. Smith may be a name tied to you on Earth, but it is not the true self. Then consider Mr. Smith's accomplishments, ideals and lifestyle, and you have another layer of ego to work with.

Then maybe you ask "who am I if not this identity?", in which case I answer that "you" are not "you"; identity is nonexistent, without the ego

*(unless you were sarcastic or have an understanding of ego, which could be true considering the smiley; I haven't read the entire thread yet, just this page. so sorry if this post was a misfire)
