as i was reading through the rap is crap thread, i came to a different thought than most. before this summer i would have fallen right in with you that said rap sucks its all about the bitches and money and all that shit, cause yeah that is the rap you hear....but after this summer i had some friends who listened to underground rap, and i cannot truthfully say that i think all rap sucks, because the underground stuff has some really powerfully lyrics arranged with some amazing music. dont let the radio, and the world, fool you, rap really is more than just whats portrayed you should check out some Atmosphere, Sage Francis, or Brother Ali those are three of the bands that made me change my mind on rap; they have some pretty good messages and awesome lyrics.... well just my thoughts, i hope it hasnt turned into rambling
Honestly I dont enjoy rap, but for those people who "free style" I do respect. But Eminem...no thanks.
I have never been a fan of rap, but you're right, it probably was only because of the stigma attached to it. Everything I've heard was garbage, but there are talents in all kinds of music. I've heard this one really great psychedelic rap song a while ago...a bit too violent on my tastes, but really powerful lyrics. So yeah, condemning a whole genre of music is not really right. Some rap really isn't just a repeating beat and rhymes, some of it really is heavy and meaningful .
Oh this is more than true friend, I was under the same impression that the majority of rap had become that of bling, bitches, and blunts, with the few exceptions of The Beastie Boys, and shaz like that.... that faded when I was like 15 though, and I heard Del the Funkee Homosapian. There is a ton of great rap and hip/hop out there, tons I'm sure I haven't heard of. Brother Ali and Atmosphere (from my home state ) are indeed fucking awesome. Also check out Blackalicious, Deltron 3030, Busdriver (funky dub inspired freestyle shit) The J. Davis Trio (more beatnick style hip/hop), and Riddlore. I loves me rap.
Anyone in Dr.Octagon, or any turntablist like Dj Q-bert, Atrak, etc? There's alot of really great rap out there, it's just all covered up by mainstream crap(much like every other music scene)
DJ Q-bert is a legend in the hip hop community and is now a hero to young filipino americans. that's another thing about hip hop it's very universal. many different cultures and ethnicities contribute one way or another.
