Hi, I am new to this forum. I am wanting dreadlocks but I only have probably 3-4 inches of hair. I am using the knotty boy kits but not using wax. I am tempted to wait until my hair gets to my shoulders to start my journey, but really want them now. Is there any way I can make my hair grow faster so I can start my dreads? I am going to college in a month and want them for college but I really dont want short ones. PLEASE HELP! ANY ADVICE WILL BE MUCH APPRECIATED!

not much you can do to make your hair grow. they have some vitamin/shampoos that supposably work pretty well. I definetly wouldnt use the shampoo if you are looking for dreads, and the vitamins change your hair and make it different so i hear. Im sure there are some natural ways to just increase hair growth, but not that i know of.

you can start your dreads now, just stop combing. and go pick up some dr bronners, i havnt used knotty boy shampoo, but i hvae used dreadhead and it sucked for sure.
You mght be able to backcomb at 4 inches, but its gotta be ATLEAST 4. but either way, month old dreads are barely babies, barely even securely locked yet. Theres no way of avoiding the short locks though if your looking to have them done in a month with just 4 inches of hair. i guess you could always get extensions.

haha, thats not what I mean. I mean, I am thinking of waiting another 6 or 7 months until I get hair down to my shoulders to start. Thats what I want to decide!

okay then. that works out a little better lol

ummm from what I've read, if you're going natural, longer hair tends to make bigger dreads (correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm at abouttt 5 inches right now. I'm preparing myself for the plunge into not playing with it anymore. Because, for me, not fussing with my hair is sooo hard. That and my girlfriend likes it too.

So yeah. I'm not waiting till it is down to my shoulders, but who knows. Do as you please good sir. Perhaps you'll just enjoy long hair!

hey man, if you want dreads, you might as well start now. it's going to take at least a year probably anyways for them to really form anyways. my hair was about shoulder length when I started, but I actually wish I had started with hair the length of yours. it would be much more fun. just wash it every once in a while and stop combing, and you are well on your way.

if going natural, I don't think the length of hair really determines the size of the dreads. the hair naturally sections it off into the right sizes, and it will just grow how it wants to grow. but the longer the hair to start with, the more it will shrink.

well, from what I read on the forums, the logic behind it is that hair locks up with the hair that it can reach. So, because shorter hair can only reach a few other hairs, the locks tend to form smaller. Longer hair has greater reach, so it can lock with more hairs.

The logic has its flaws, don't get me wrong. I would tend to think that all hairs close to each other locked up together, you could have one massive dread regardless of hair length.

I'm not an expert on the locking process. Just passing along what I've heard
