there's just not enough backing these days for Libertarians... there are so many people who don't even know what a Libertarian is. Everyone is blinded into buying this whole two party thing. People need to wake up.
Yeah, I had a gander at his voting record, how did he even pull off being let near the libertarian party? Crazily against medical weed, same sex marriage, religious freedom etc. I mean, WRF?
He's not genuine. He once worked for the CIA, and I have no reason to believe he isn't still working for them. He was at one time one of the leading proponents in the bogus war on drugs. He is supposedly against abortion, yet convinced his wife to have one in '83. The guy is a total fake. He's also been heavily compromised because of his involvement in extramarital affairs.
bab barr is or at least was against every thing libertarians(i am definitely not one) believe in. hes just a typical politician. even the third party is candidate is just another puppet
You know, sometimes people can have a change of heart. Have you never changed your mind on anything? What if one day you woke up and the light bulb just went on? If you look at his current stance on these issues mentioned above, you might see that maybe he's realized that legistlating morality is a bad idea. That maybe limited government is a good idea after all. That maybe there's such a thing as live and let live. I doubt he'll get elected, but if he at least draws some good press for the Libertarian Party, then all the better! I'm tired of the two party system, and the LP is the best choice out there for me. If Bob Barr is what it takes to draw the needed attention to turn it into a three party system, then so be it!
No one simply has a sudden change of heart, at least no one who is at least slightly intelligent. Barr is a lier and a crook who saw that he had an opportunity to run as the Libertarian candidate and took it. His voting record should speak for itself.
I personally am a Libertarian, but only as of recently and I'm still putting in a lot of research. I don't know much about Barr's past, but a long with that change of heart thing - I have looked enough into it to think that could be true. The way it sounds he used to be a GOP and then they burned him on things like the patriot act. Everything I've heard from him seems Libertarian enough. And as far as the abortion thing, that does line up with Libertarians lol Free to be against it, but not opposed to allowing it. Frankly, Obama's a crazy mofo, and so is McCain. If Barr is too, who even cares at this point. Barr is at least standing for a real change and progress, even if he isn't the best suited to stand for it.
Mike Gravel was the best they could have done but the party failed us with barr. Mike Gravel was the most libertarian of the candidates.
I used to be ridiculously conservative, enough to make myself cringe thinking about it, and over the course of a few months I made a complete 180 and began to accept the "live and let live" philosophy. I realized what people were doing was not affecting me and they should have the freedom to do whatever they wanted. Not saying that Bob Barr experienced the same thing, but it's certainly possible.
I agree that people can have a change of heart. Anyone have any links to articles, press conferences, videos where he has apologized to the groups he has "waged war" against in the past? Being Wiccan I would need to see that....we can't fight and die for our country...give me a break. I was very saddened by their choice at first glance, but have been hoping to find a reason to forgive his previous stance.
I didn't attend the convention, but I felt that Gravel and Barr had similar liabilities. I was told by one of the delegates from my home state that he had a talk with Barr and that Barr had told him that he did have a change of heart on many of the topics that caused grave concern to many lovers of liberty. FTR, this same individual voted for Gravel until Gravel was 'bumped off.' I was originally hoping that Mary Ruwart would've gotten the nomination. Unfortunately, I was told that she had said that it was OK for children (pre- pubescent) to participate in porn films if they so desired. While I myself am quite liberal when it comes to my views on sexual conduct, I must question Ruwart's logic here. Our adversaries would have had a field day with us and the LP would've been marginalized and/or been dwarfed in to virtual obsolescence for at least a decade if not longer! We saw what happened to former US Senator George Allen from Virginia. Like him or not, the 'makakah'(sp?) comment cost him the election. We would've almost certainly faced similar or worse scrutiny! I would like to say that many in the LP were practically begging Ron Paul to run with us, but he wouldn't go for it! On a completely different topic, I want to thank Skip or whomever was responsible for restoring more of one's past postings.
This is what I've been hearing from most people honestly, and I think it's a double edged sword. On one hand, the libertarian party is a runner up and split vote party and it will probably not get voted in anyway. On the other, this race has had the most undecided people at this point for a very long time and many people aren't happy with either of the usual candidates. I think that the unfortunate thing about this years libertarian candidate is that there will be the people who vote for Barr because he's on the ballet, and people who write in Ron Paul because he's the better candidate. This is going to split the party's vote and all those who are undecided on the other main parties and if there was any chance of there being a third party President for this next term it will have been lost for this reason. Personally, I do like Ron Paul's stance and reputation much more than Barr's, but I don't know what to tell people when they ask for my opinion on the situation. The more people behind Barr, the more likely he'll win (fat chance anyway I guess) but the more people voting for Ron Paul the more votes for real change and liberty. It is not a situation I like.(duh) ...
So, I'm thinking a lot of people that like to call themselves "Libertarian" are just trying to go against the grain, without really knowing what it means. Bob Barr, is a libertarian. He may not hold the same personal values as some of us, but he does believe that we, as americans, have the right to live how we want. Like a true libertarian, it's not about what he thinks is morally right or wrong, but what the common people want and vote for. It's in the constitution, and everything that this country is founded on: Liberty, Freedom, and letting "we the people" figure things out, and stop letting Uncle Sam dictate our lives. It's not the same as anarchy. There are still laws, and like it or not, laws come directly on what the general public believes is right or wrong. The difference is, an elite group of rich corporate dictators aren't telling us what we can and can't do, but rather the citizens of each state. that's the way it was set up, that's the way that Bob Barr wants to see it done. So if you're mad 'cause he doesn't give special rights to gays, stoners, or whatever else you are, then you should consider Obama and get off the libertarian band wagon.
Even though I've been a sixteen year long Libertarian activist, I am quite frustrated as to what I'll do come November for the reasons stated above. I'm considering writing in Ron Paul as well, but don't know for sure! I was taken aback by the recent 'dissing' of Ron Paul by Barr which I think was inexcusable!
Absolutly inexcusable, Ron Paul was a supporter of him as the Libertarian canidate and there is no reason he should have wipped around and said anything negative about him.
Just a few years ago, Barr was running a witch hunt. I don't mean that figuratively, I mean that quite literally. More specifically, he was trying to get the US military to hunt down and discharge anyone associated with Wiccan or Pagan religions. Someone must have dosed him.
