Hi all I've had dreads for about 6 months now, I bought the DreadheadHQ kit before I started reading all those testimonials saying how much the dreadhead stuff sucked. Is the "dreadlock truth" really true? Does hair really dread better with just a residue free shampoo and nothing else? I'm somewhat happy with how they look though, unfortunately I can't get pics of them right now so I'll just have to describe them.... -The roots are still very undreaded and all over the place -About 90% of the dreads are now fully locked up (apat from the roots and tips) -Some of the thinner dreads are still just twisted hair which really pisses me off! They've only just started dreading for an inch or so towards the tips So basically my questions are: -Do dread kits not work AT ALL? Or do they just slow the overall process? -What should I do from here? Most of the dreads are too locked up to start again from scratch, should i just switch to resideue free shampoo only? Or is there another method? I know it's still early stages really, but I'm a bit worried....hehe I'm sure some of you can relate to this I'd be grateful for any advice/info you can provide. Thanks
I looked at videos from knotyboy yesterday for fun, they got kits. Found it real funny how they make dreadlocks just for money and they just break peoples hair and dont do anything good. But if you do start with a kit and let your hair alone yea maybe you'll end up with dreads, but forget about all the journey and why dreadlocks really are fun and interesting to get with time. So I say dread kits DO work yes, if you dont use too much wax, I know my girlfriend did at the beginning and a couple time after and she has great dreads now but time as made them not all the useless product they sell you. What you should do now is get residue free soap and wash your hair with it and wait, thats all, unlocked hair eventually will form dreads. Before starting my dreads while I was growing my hair I wondered how to get them, as if it was an hairstyle eh.. no, dreadlocks are a way of living, they personally changed a lot of things about me. I thought I'd need to backcomb and wax and all that stuff, then I went here and forgot about the wax, which is prolly the worst thing you can do to you hair, it can work yes... but its not worth the results. If you want real nice dreadlocks you need - Hair on you head - Residue free soap - Time Good bye
they are actualy quite harmful if u use the wax your dreads will suffer and rot and smell if u use the lock peoppoa your dreads will be full of flakes backcombing itself is dammaging to hair..and tends to actualy rip alot out at the roots aqnyone with a long haired dog can tell ya how often they have to cut or breush out matts of hair that form (dreads) naturaly your hair will do the same giventime if ya just stop combing the kits cost 40$ and the only thing in the kit that shouldnt be tossed immediatelky in the trash would be the 3$ flea comb u can get at any pet store and thats only if your more in it for style then for lifestyle best way to get dreads..go spend a month or 2 in the woods away from combs mirrors anything like that, bath in a river..wear a wool tam totaly forget about youtr hair awhile pay no attention to it and let it be..well except every other week seperate the newly forming dread sextions from eachother dreads are becomming popular so salons and beauty product suppliers wanna capitalkize in it because naturaly dreading means stepping away from such things ..hairstylists barbers special conditioners dyes sprayts gels all that crap they sell ya are no longer needed so what do they do to draw ya back in? convince ya you need this complicated technique backcombing palm rolling root and tip rubbung ..and a long list of products waxes accelerators locking gels all the crap your trying to get away from they tell ya you need just to keep ya a slave to the vanity driven market dreads cost nothing but time
Wow...thanks for the responses so far, it's cleared a lot of things up. The more I think about it, the more I agree. I'm also glad that soaringeagle contributed because I've seen pics of your dreads before and they kick ass!!!!! The wooly hat thing does seem to work well, I've been doing that over the last day or so and it already seems to be making a big difference.
Well so far I've just been using the Dreadhead shampoo.....seems to work okay i guess. Although I think I'll switch to Dr Bronner's now, everyone keeps raving about how good it is so I think its worth a try
To me they kind of defeat the purpose of getting dreads in the first place (at least for me personally) I love the history of dreads and other than the spiritual side of them I realize more each day that to me they symbolize anti-materialism. I refuse to buy any hair products, cut my hair or really do anything to it other than occasionally twist em for fun. By providing a "product" that is sold in order to obtain what I like to call "consumer" dreads that are more for fashion and look I would be going against their symbolic meaning of anti-materialism. So, that why I PERSONALLY have a problem with them.
Please explain to me how my hair is a material object? We don't willingly make hair, it's actually protein growing out of our epidermis. It's not an object I purchased, or can profit off of. To me my hair is not a "object", that is how I perceive my dreads and to tell me other wise is simply you giving me your opinion. And you assume I am obsessed with my hair? If I was I suppose I'd probably have put wax in it and tried to get my dreads to look a certain way....I don't really do anything to my hair, other than let it grow naturally and like I said play with it for fun. I didn't bash a single person, if anyone is bashing anyone you sir are bashing me for my own personal opinion. I stated my opinion and if another has a certain view of dreads (so long as it is not negative or condescending) I have absolutely no problem with it. Please read this thread: http://www.hipforums.com/newforums/showthread.php?t=310679 As you can see I obviously encourage viewing dreads as spiritual and will gladly make an attempt at getting others to recognize the history of them, however what they think of them is completely up to them and not me. This is honestly the most offended I think I have ever felt in regards to the internet, you put an opinion/mindset on me that does not exist. EDIT: I can see you edited your post. Brother, I have never verbally attacked anyone for their reason(s) for getting dreads and never will, I simply give my opinion as to what I think of them and why I myself have them. Please never again put words in another persons mouth or claim they are "bashing others" by giving their harmless opinion on a subject.
Many thanks, it is comforting to know that others share a somewhat common belief (minus various minor alterations) as to what dreads mean to us as individuals. Bass scholar (although he edited his post) made it sound as though I was "bashing" others for their reason(s) for getting/having dreads. As I already said, I would never and have never done such a thing.
I share similar views to my homie bthizle.....although I have already given my opinion on this subject many times, so I don't really feel it necessary to write it out again.
I don't really care, Frankly. Your dreamy wannabe philosophies, You said you have a problem with people making a living by selling "dread products". why would it matter to you and why would you give a fuck? wraping your mind around any one thing would would make you obsessed. Material things are all composed of matter, sorry. For you to care about anything composed of matter would make you material. FUCK your hair. I don't care about the wannabe rasta, They can linger in shadows while the world goes to shit, like they have been for a while. when your hair falls out with age, then what? what do you have to prove your all "spiritual" then? HAHA We live in a world where everything is exactly as it seems.
I think you should open your eyes just for two second and look around you eh, don't wanna start talking about that or anything but dreads aren't just an hair style like anything else, it can learn you many things in the process. Anyway about the materialism, materialist are people who care too much about unnecessary material products, not hair or natural things. I guess bthizle don't say anything stupid in his posts, I respect what he thinks and being spiritual about dreadlocks is a good thing I myself do, since he travel a lot and backpack? I read that.. anyway he should know a thing or two about non materialism cause I don't think he brings his 50 inches plasma T.V while traveling by foot.
Dude, I never said I had a problem with people selling dread products, but I would discourage it and certainly never pursue that form of business for myself. You seem to be pretty hostile for no reason whatsoever. Nobody in this thread has offended you in any way, so there is no need for your negative words. My philosophies are my own views on life and everything that is, they are not as you say, "wannabe philosophies" as I believe them so they actually ARE. For someone who just claimed that hair is material to then state that somebodies views on a specific subject are simply "wannabe" seems a bit odd and contradictive to me.... I don't really "wrap my mind" around the fact that I have dreads, I do however accept it as a fact, because I indeed do have em. I'm in no way obsessed with them, however I do appreciate them for reasons of which I have already discussed. And I am not a "wannabe rasta" either. I do agree with many of their teachings, such as staying away from Babylon (materialism), living a natural life, and respect for all living things, however I do not subscribe to the idea of Haile I Selassie being God incarnate nor do I really even believe in their notion of "God". As for when my hair falls out (that is if it will), then oh well....My dreads are for myself, not for others. Their symbolic meaning is for me, so whether or not I have em my beliefs will most likely still remain the same. And do we really live in a world where everything is exactly as it seems? As though the Aztecs knew that there was another civilization much more advanced than themselves (spanish) before they ever came in contact? We are not only making self discoveries on a daily bases as individuals, but also our society is continually being revolutionized with new thought that didn't exist prior to it's conception. (Example: People once thought the earth was flat) So as you can see, life and our surroundings are not always what they "seem".
Your telling me what THEY told you. Ive heard it all FOOL.im not hostile, what you are looking at are words. I said I DON"T CARE,FRANKLY. Im godless,a narcissist, I am probably everything you hate and more. Really, you must not understand. Your obsessed, with paragraphs of bullshit. You may think you have seen alot, or know much. Think your a wise man, just cause you have dreads. You just put everything you believe into one post. 6+4=10 Was I even writing about you?
