Obviously everyone is different on how fast they go, side trails, etc, and what kind and how much food they eat. But what are some reasonable avg estimates (or actual experience #'s) of how long it would take to do the whole trail, and cost?
I've always heard it takes about three months from friends who have done it. I'd estimate 10 to 20 bucks a day for supplies, and some of the huts hit you up for cash if you camp there, usually around 5 to 10 bucks, so you're talking 900 bucks minimum. I'd budget 1500, not too bad for three months of your life.
Current record is 99 days, last time I looked and the average is 182 days. I know people who have thru'd for under $2000 and some who spent over $10,000.
Very interesting! I wonder whats more typical, and if there is a reason, North to South, or South to North...
NOBO or SOBO is personal preference. Even though SOBO's seem to have a superior attitude. I think it's because they hike in the winter. I'd rather be home for Xmas.
Woops, sorry, did I have that wrong or what? Somehow that three month figure stuck in my mind, but six is the average. Here's a link to some useful information, which confirms Zoomie's estimate.
And for this SOBOs get delusions of grandeur? I'll pass, thanks. Sub zero in NoGA NC and TN, High 90s here in MD, black bears in NJ and snow in the Greens and Whites in July are quite enough excitement for me.
I went on the AT trail in Tennessee and North Carolina... beautiful. Especially by the falls in Tennessee... i forgot the exact name of it. Its truly a beautiful place to enjoy at least once in your life.
