This morning in Knoxville, Tennessee there was a shooting a Unitarian Universalist Church. A man entered, opened fire killing one man who surrendered himself before others werse shot, and another person died later in the hospital. The suspect is currently being held on a $1million dollar bail. At this point the motive remains unknown. However, prior to shooting aparently the man did scream something, a woman interviewed refused to say or re-word what he said, obviously it was something rude and hatefulto say the VERY least! I was raised going to a Unitarian church, but I know many people don't even really know what a Unitarian is. It's a non-denominataional church, but not non-denominataional Christian. It welcomes believers of all faiths, and teaches about all the worlds traditions. It also welcomes Gays and Lesbians. It's quite hard to explain...which makes people question it a lot more. But the church I went to consisted of people with all sorts of religious backgrounds including those who were raised Unitarian themselves. I can't say Unitarians do this or that...because they don't; each person is so varied in their belief system that to make a statement is difficult. However, Unitarians are openminded and welcome to progressive thought. The FBI has been brought in, as this is being investigated as a potential hate crime. Here is a quote from the NYT: "The gunman's motive is not yet known. The church, like many other Unitarian Universalist churches, promotes progressive social work, such as desegregation and fighting for the rights of women and gays. The Knoxville congregation has provided sanctuary for political refugees, fed the homeless and founded a chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, according to its Web site." Basically I am fed up with hate! This makes me so frustrated with the world. I can only make assumptions about the suspects background, and I won't even go there. But why can't we all believe what we want. Why are some raised to believe their beliefs are the laws of life, and that anyone who holds different beliefs or accepts new and progressive ideas whether involving religion or culture are wrong and need to be fixed??!?!! UGH!!! http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/us/AP-Church-Shooting.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin
I think its premature to call it a hate crime. This person sounds mentally unbalanced. I don't believe in holding a mentally ill person to the same standard of the law. Guess we'll know more in a day or two. x
The law won't tell the difference. We all saw what happened. I don't believe anything was stolen. That's my opinion.
Although i was not there I am almost positive it was a hate crime, but yes only time will tell. Fortunately, right before the shootings, kids were putting on a play during the service. Thus there were several videocameras of proudparents, which caught his words on camera. A shooting at Unitarian Church, in Tennesse??? I might be wrong, but this is very likely to be a hate crime. and what do you mean yuo don't believe anything was stolen??
I don't understand the term "hate crime." A crime is a crime. If you kill a person, you deserve to go to jail. End of story.
for the most part, i agree with you? im just wondering when all the hate will go away? When will people learn to tolearte the life choices of others? Someone is probably gonna say why not tolerate the choice of someone to kill someome else? If you're thinking that you're an idiot...and you know what I mean
When your shit turns to gold, my friend They're an idiot for making a clever point about tolerance? If one should be tolerant of others, what of the assholes? Not to mention that to certain people, other cultures seem as equally evil as this fellow who went unloading clips on innocents. If I believe cows are holy, and you eat them, should I be tolerant of your actions? What "worldwide tolerance" requires in order to function is a single view of what is right/correct to do in life. As long as several contrasting beliefs exist, so will conflict.
