So the journey begins. I can't wait until they start to lock, and I plan on doing everything properly to accelerate the process (occasional saltwater, wearing a wool tam constantly, etc). I'll try to post progress pics. Do you guys think this is a decent start? My sister was kind enough to spend 10 hours on this, and in return I watched the first 4 Harry Potter movies; something she's wanted me to do for years!

how comes it took 10 hours? mine did, but my hair was twice as long as yours, and i did much MUCH smaller ones. looks like it was done up pretty good as far as backcombing goes, and doesn't look like you fell into the wax trap. should turn out pretty awesome!

although it looked like you might have some rubber bands in it? if you do, TAKE THEM OUT!! they will just get gummy and rip shit out when you go to pull them out. trust me. i had tons in, and they were a pain in the ass. they literally melted into the hair. ewwww.

also, just so you know, the dreads that you put wraps on will not dread. the hair has to move for them to dread. i did that with a couple, and when i took the wraps out 8 months later, i had strands of hair that was NOT dreaded at all.

all in all, looks like you're gonna have some fat ass dreads!

I happen to be heterosexual, but I certainly wouldn't find the word 'gay' to be insulting in relation to my dreads. I think you might could find a less offensive adjective :cheers2:

No rubber bands in them, and no wax. So should I take the wraps off relatively soon? I was thinking they might still dread but wouldn't be quite as large.

Fair enough.. I tend to gather that there are quite a bit of dreads floating around the particular section of the forum

You know, if you don't care for dreads, you don't actually have to spend your time looking through the threads and spreading needless negativity to the community... You could, you know... go outside, read a book, talk to someone, cook something, paint a picture, etc... The list is endless! :) But anyway, your dreads look sweet man! Enjoy the journey.

    oh hi there! ;)

OMG! your dreads look awesome! I can't wait to see pics as they lock up. I think mine looked like that after a week or so!
I like the wraps! I just did 2 in mine last weekend (I'll post pics in a day or so).

Overall, your dreads look epic for being freshly done!
    Hooray for your sister! lol

Lookin' natttty mate, those are gonna be some awesome fatties. Just remember, patience is above all.

Though i'm gonna warn you that those crochetted ends are most likely gonna come out sooner or later, some of them are already peeking on the picture (i know exactly how it goes from self experience). So unless you really want to keep crochetting them back in until they stay, dont sweat it, it's bound to happen to most of them and most people here semi-frown on crochetting anyway. Although I have like 3-4 left which tips never came out and they're the tightest dreads i have so far, but in the long run there's no difference. Dno...just thought i'd add that.

Did you seperate them into segments before you back-combed them? I'm about to try to back-comb mine but i'm debating whether I should do this or not. If you did do you have any picture or how did you go about doing it?

after backcombing she used a small crochet hook to pull the tips into the dread

No pics of the separating, but we used small rubber bands ONLY for separating and removed them when it was time to comb each section.

hey man! awesome for not having bands in... i thought you did, cause i didn't know you had crocheted the ends in. which imo i like the loose, curly ends (i had mine all crazy rounded on the tips, and when i ripped 'em apart i realized how much i like 'em better undreaded at the tips), but that's a personal preference thing.

if you want those dreads to dread, you gotta take the wraps off or they will not dread at all. dreading happens when the hair moves around and rubs against each other. otherwise, no dreading happens. i know this from experience, lol! i had a couple of completely undreaded pieces that i had to just wait until they started to catch up to the others on my head. if you really wanna do wraps while they are still in process of dreading, do small sections of the dread instead of covering the whole thing, and then every couple washings change the section you wrap. or just unwrap and wrap up a different dread each time, whatever works for you. but yeah, they don't dread when they're under wraps.
