How many of you like it, and who are some really good artists?

I recently got into this late fall 2007, and I have to say that I am hooked. I guess it all started during the holiday season while shopping with my wife in a Gap store, and they were playing a song that I liked years before, but never bothered finding out what it was. When I asked the salesperson and manager, neither of them could tell me, so I made it a quest to find out when I got home. Well it turned out to be Billy May's Samba version of "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" Remix... Download it and you'll see what I'm talking about. That and the entire "Merry Mixmas" holiday CD.

For those of you that are not familiar with Trip Hop, it basically has a lot of brass and other instruments, overlying a smooth hip beat. Similar to Jazz, but coordinated with modern hip hop beats. In a way, its a little hard to pinpoint specific artists that perform trip hop other than underground artists, but some that have dabbled in it would be Jurrasic 5, Beck, DJ Shadow, Portishead, The Propellorheads, and a few others.

I think it's an underrated genre, and deserves a lot more attention... What do you think?

It's a bit of a 90's genre. Personally I like the trip hop that keeps its distance from rapping vocals. Haunting/ambient female vocals suit the smoothness of the beat a lot better.

I agree. Trip Hop is so much better without vocals. But sampling vocals once in a while within the song is okay I guess. Just as long as it's not full on lyrics.

for sure. thats why i enjoy the herbalizer. light on the vocals, but when there are, they come in at the right time and it is generally a soothing females voice.

i dont know if i would fit massive attack under trip hop, but they are deffinetly great artists.
