The last few nights when I have been drifting off to sleep (in about that middle stage where youre not quite sleeping, and not quite awake) I have been having the strangest sensations. It's like a bolt of electricity goes through me and shakes me back to being fully awake. Last night, that happened once then I started to fall back asleep then I was shook awake by a falling sensation, the third time I was almost a sleep it felt like someone was whispering in my ear- thus waking me again.
Does anyone know what this is about?! does it happen to anyone else?!

there's a science behind the falling sensation, but never heard of the electricity deal

I have the exact same thing happen to me every night, it scares me a bit yet I kinda enjoy it.

I get the falling sensation. Ill be just about asleep and Ill start to lucid dream (where you're aware of it being a dream and still partly awake) and Ill suddenly dream that Ive fallen down the flight of stairs at my front door. Ill spring awake and try to brace myself for the fall.

As wormed said, there are a few scientific theories on why this happens, but I cant remember what they are right now.

Edit: I just remembered one of them: One of the main theories Ive heard is that the falling or electric feeling you get is your body responding to the onset of sleep parallysis. That's where (for unknown reasons) your body loses all strength when you're asleep. It's dangerous because it can lead to you stopping breathing while asleep (similar to sleep apnea). So, it's thought that when you're brain realises this is about to happen, it creates this sensation to "shock" you back awake so as to regain consious control of your motor senses.
