I've recently got into Dream Theater through a compilation a friend made me - and I'm still blown away! John Petrucci is fast becoming one of my favourite guitarists, and the songs themselves are fucking epic. My personal favourite is probably 'In the Name of God'. Thoughts?
They are one of my favorite bands. Systematic Chaos was a disappointment, though. My favorite albums are Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Train of Thought, Octavarium, and Images and Words. Scenes From a Memory and Awake are very good as well. They've never really made a bad album, just some are better than others. Disappear = Most heartfelt Dream Theater song, as well as one of the few songs ever made that can pretty much bring me to tears.
I love Dream Theater. And I actually liked their new album (especially "In The Presence of Enemies pt. 1 & 2" and "The Dark Eternal Night"). But it does have some weak tracks and they've had better albums. You ever listen to Liquid Tension Experiment? It's a side project that the Guitarist, Keyboardist, and Drummer of Dream Theater did (John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, And Mike Portnoy) along with Tony Levin on bass/chapman stick. It's all instrumental music and its like fusiony-crazy-cool music . (I've been actually just getting in to LTE).
ahhh My favorite band EVER, I love evrything from them! But if I had to pick an album it would be Scenes from a memory. I saw them live twice, once in 2005 for the 8v tour and once in 2007 for the SC tour. Both show blowed me away!
Yeah, I've seen them many, many times. My favorite album of theirs is Awake. Although the talent is, of course, still there with their newer stuff, I wish they'd get back to how they used to write back in the day. And yeah, LTE is fucking amazing. I saw them a few weeks back in NYC. Incredible show.
eh, they're okay. I used to be quite into them back about 5 years ago. Images & Words is still one of my favorite albums and in my opinion their best. The rest range from really meh to all right... there are some great moments but they are too few and far between for me to really say good things about the band :/ Train of Thought is probably my second fav behind I&W. The first 20 minutes or so of Scenes from a Memory are pretty bitchin too
Yea. I was really surprised actually. So was my brother. He's a huge fan and has seen them a few times over the past 8 years or so. He said the same thing. He mostly just played solo riffs that came off like scales and exercises. It can't really explain it, he just played lazy. Naturally after that many years of playing the way he does one is bound to get a little tired of it, that or run out of brilliant ideas. I was still glad to see them though.
