Does buddhism ever mention dreams in any of its writings? I have read some stuff but I never came across any mentions of dreams. I was just curious if it is ever discussed.
I know in the Tibetan tradition (Which I follow) dreams are very important- so important that there is even a special yoga for them- Dream yoga.
Dreaming is one state of consciouness. It is the expression of karmic desires and memories. Vedanta (what the Buddha studied/practiced before being awoken) more clearly defines/illustrates each stage of consciouness.
Not generally considered beginners practices, but there are extensive writings/teachings on the subject; ( as mentioned, predominantly in Tibetan Buddhism.) Off hand, you could obtain a copy of Dream Yoga and the Practice of Natural Light By Chogyal Namkhai Norbu or check out these pages for more info. http://www.plotinus.com/zhine_tibetan_dream_yoga_copy.htm
Yeah, look up Tibetan Dream Yoga at Amazon. There's also a Bonpo primer on it. Yes, Tibetan Buddhists do much dream work. But best English book on subject ever is called , "Creative Dreaming."
