It is a custom from Persia, which is still practiced. Everybody attending the wedding gets a diamond ring, as a token of appreciation for attending the ceremony!
LOL I'm Persian (both of my parents were born and raised in Iran) and have been to dozens of Persian weddings in both the U.S. and Iran and have yet to be given a diamond ring. If only But seriously, I don't think even the Persian multi-millionaires are willing to do that. What is custom is giving the bride gold jewelry as a wedding gift.
