There was this bus crash north of Dallas a few days ago. I think 17 people got killed.

You ever wonder why busses don't have seat belts?

I remember wondering the same thing sitting on the bus in first grade to learn how to be safe. It was a rare treat seeing as that's one of the only times i've ever been in a bus.

Some buses do...but I imagine it is more difficult to cut people out when they are strapped in.
It is not like they can cut the roof off and hoist them out.

I've never seen a bus in the US with seat belts.

And more difficult can't be the reason. Why worry about how to get someone out of the bus when protecting them while their in there should be a bigger concern.

Over here, that concern seem to have materialised into legislation.
My dad was a fireman and he went to a few crashes.
He told me it was, to use his words: A bugger to get them out.
As many belts jammed in place.
They are good for forward/backward shunts - stops you hitting the window screen.
If you are in the back, they stop you hitting the driver/passenger.
Factor in we are talking busses here, a bus will probably roll over in an accident.
    The benefits seem to decrease.
    But I'm no expert.
The Department for transport seem to think they are needed, although only in certain types of buses, coaches and minibuses .

They are all well and good in a shunt, I guess, but probably not something I'd like to be wearing in a full on crash, to be honest.

Which ever way you look at it, a large bus rolling over is not going to do your body much good.

When I last looked into it, it was not a requirement.
    But, some still had them.
It seems, more recently, they are mandatory for certain busses.

    Americans like freedom, right?
Perhaps why they are not there yet.

I think security all around for buses is a little outdated and needs to be revised...just recently in canada a dude was decapitated by a complete stranger while sleeping on a bus...

I don't necessarily consider buses not being mandated to have safety features a freedom.

Security? What do you want? Bus Marshalls?

I think back when I was in like 3rd or 4th grade, there was a big debate going on (at least in PA) about whether or not busses should have seat belts. We never got seat belts on our bus, so I guess the law never passed. We did get cameras though

    I was joking.
No belt, unrestricted movement, free, freedom.
I thought it was funny anyway

Some busses do have seatbelts, they just aren't required.

We have a private intercity shuttle system here that is mostly owned by Chinese-American interests. It's called the "Dragon Bus". For $19 you can ride from DC to Manhattan with stops in Philly and Baltimore. I went once to see a Broadway show. On the way up the driver fashioned a bong out of an iced tea bottle and smoked up on the Jersey Turnpike. Nice. On the way back, the driver got lost between Chinatown and Tribeca, went the wrong way down about 5 streets and hit 4 parked cars one of which belonged a NYC firefighter. The cops chased us all the way to the Holland Tunnel before she stopped.

So yeah, no more busses for me.

Coaches (long distance buses) have seatbelts here and they're compulsory which I think is so good. Normal buses don't have them but then you're also allowed to stand in them..

^^what is the meaning of this!? ya know that's a bannable offense...

it's even more disturbing that it's ok to spell it either way, how many words can get away with that? (other than american/british spellings)

Yeah I have actually. But I seldom ride the bus so I don't worry about it. I usually either travel by car or train.

There should be some form of security stopping people with hunting knives from boarding a bus yes, unfortunately it isn't likely to happen....
