I saw a movie at a film festival called Flow: For the Love of Water. This movie was a major eye-opener to the problems with water pumping, privatization, and water scarcity in different parts of the world and it also talks about what people can do to help. This movie was supposed to go to theaters in the northeastern region of the U.S. So if this movie does come to a theater near you go see it. It will open your eyes and just by going to see it you are giving it potential to go to theaters everywhere and if it goes to theaterseverywhere then it will teach people of these problems on a massive scale and hopefully people will take action when they learn about these problems.
Does the movie give the reasons for water privatization? From what I've read many of the public or government run water systems in many developing countries are badly run. Here's an example of an African country's experiment with privatization.
The movie interviews the CEOs of the major water companies. These CEOs are the ones doing the privatization and that is so they can use the water to bottle and sell to make profit while making the water inaccessible to the people that can't afford it and in the countries that are being privatized the people that live around the water source can't afford it. The only way that the residents can get the water is to buy it yet these people can't afford to buy it. Corruption is the main problem and the movie goes in depth on the key factors that are contributing to the problems.
Is water privatization the problem or is it how it's being done? Everybody has to pay for water through a water bill. It takes money to maintain the infrastructer that keeps the water clean. What alternative solutions were offered in this movie?
Not so my property has it's own well as do those of my neighbors, the only thing we do is pay for the electricity to power the pump. As water becomes a comodity, two things will happen the aquafers that supply private homeowner wells will dry up because they will be pumped dry by large corporations with higher priced attorneys. Legislation will be passed saying that private dwelling wells are illegal and we will all have to sign on and pay for government provided water which will be purchased with tax dollars through private corporations at huge initial expense, and guarrantee these corporations captive markets. If you believe these private corporations will provide you safe clean drinking water for a reasonable price think again. The only thing they focus on is the bottomline. That's why our pets have been poisoned, our children provided lead laced toys, our fighting young men and women could tell you stories about the clean water they've been provided in Iraq by Halliburton and subsidiaries. They aren't pretty. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11854311/ http://www.zimbio.com/KBR++/articles/14/12+GIS+ELECTROCUTED+IRAQ+FORMER+HALLIBURTON And the final straw will be legislation will be passed to hold these corporations above the law and liability for any wrong doing or negligence. Just check out what Cocoa Cola and their bottled water and privatization of India's water rights have done. http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?id=7508 http://www.indiaresource.org/campaigns/coke/index.html
It's disgusting what Coca-Cola has done in India bottling plants, and they're doing the same thing all across South America right now, especially in Colombia. Good suggestion, I would like to watch this film.
