Hi I am about to set forth on my dread journey. I got the dreadhead kit and of course it has the wax. So should I use the wax the one time after backcombing or never? My hair is to the middle of my back now and I don't want to have problems form the get go I love my hair and I love dreads. Should I section it backcomb and roll? This sucks I think I got ripped off on that whole dread kit!!!! Sounds like I don't even need half the crap in there! I am really happy that I found you all before I mad a nasty mistake.
Glad you did. You don't need a kit. Just stop brushing and play with your hair. and NEVER NEVER NEVER use wax.
Ya, most people here will tell you wax is bad, examples I've heard: your hair needs to be able to move to tighten up into dreads correctly, wax will hold them together so they look like dreads, but won't allow them to tighten. or Wax can trap water in your dreads, which can cause mold growth. Also wax is bleh. lol I'm allowing my hair to dread naturally, as for backcombing, I really don't know exactly what to do, but I think you section off your hairs and backcomb of course, but it can sometimes hurt. Other people will post though.
i bought the dreadhead kit to start out too. i used wax in the beginning and never again, and my dreads are fine. i used it VERY sparingly, but i still used it. my advice is if you use it initially just to give your locks shape, don't use it again. throw it out, you don't want a bunch of gunk :-( and no, it wasn't a complete rip off. the locking peppa is good for the initial backcombing and the accelerator is awesome any time you feel your locks are loosening up a bit. and obviously the comb is good but only use it once cause you don't want to break your hair or anything by re-backcombing.
the lock peppa is crap its rossin (that crap u put on violin bows) it will just make your hair flaky the accelerator is crap just use sea salt and water much cheaper so basicly u spent what 40-70 or somrthjing for a comb u can get at a pet store for 80 cejnts or so..lol if u choose to backcomb dont follow theyre directions the 1 inch squareds result in a very unnatural looking checkerboard pattern with each dread having no [ersonality instead section more randomly dont leave any elastics in though more then a day or 2 use thye salt water spritse weekly or so and wash with dr bronners or somethimngy simular just leave em be backcombing may be a jump start but shouldnt be thought of as part of the process or in any way getting dreads, only time will give u dreads
That's what Im saying. It was $70! Wish I had found you all before I went and bought it damm. Oh well at least I didn't do them yet. Soaringeagle how much sea salt to water do I use? Thanks.
backcombing is fairly painful and EXTREMELY time consuming. For example, if you look at the only thread I started you can see that my hair was fairly short, 4 inches maybe? It took about 7 hours for one person to do it, and a lot of pain. I didn't even use a metal comb to do it tho, just used my regular plastic one, and it seemed to work fine. So far the cost of my dreads is 7$ for a bottle of tea tree oil and some sea salt.
yeah i dunno what the definition of "crap" is, but i think if you have it you should use it. i feel for you i was just trying to make you feel better about spending so much money!
Awww thanks. I feel the same way I think at least I will use the accelerator. So I was reading on the wax label and it says that the wax is washable. Idk? I guess it is up to the person dreading their hair to make the choice.
Can you return the kit? You don't need any of those products to lock your hair. I personally would not touch any of it.
Well I have a three year old that got to it! So I think I am stuck with it. I like the smell of the wax. I guess I could give it a good ol sniff here and there to remind myself what $70 bucks smells like.
