I don't even want to joke about it. I think these drugs are one of the many things that's ruining our civilization.
An SSRI is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. It prevents the reuptake of serotonin so it stay attached to the 5-HT neuron longer. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter associated with mood, sleep, and hunger. Having more of it to metabolise in your brain generally causes an improvment in mood. Stalk, you're a moron.
There not mind control drugs. They don't dope people up. They act in a way we can see from MRI. We know how they work. They shouldn't be used for long term from what I've read, simply because they stop working after about 6 months, and if your depression is that long, perhaps there are other things that need to be approached then just neurology. You may be unhappy from the society you're living in. You shouldn't assume that's the reason everyone looks into psychiatry. A healthy distrust of the system is good. But make sure it's rational.
I agree with you, Lode, I've just seen these pills seriously fuck with a lot of people. In extremely creepy ways.
I think they're often prescribed to the wrong people. And they're overmarketed and overprescribed by people hoping to be 'fixed'. While they're are some people who's neurology is ill and needs fixing, depression isn't usually a disease started neurologically. Your body responds neurologically. It's generated psychologically. It's a disease of the heart much of the time. And you can't put a band aid over that forever and hope it goes away while people are leading the same life. When I was a kid I got hit almost daily, I was scared and depressed. So I got sent to the doctor to be drugged 'better.' I didn't need drugs. I needed change. You can't medicate away heartache. I certainly think SSRI's have a place in medecine. It's just often not supervised very well. It's used for profit.
it really did help me when i was having crazy ridiculous panic attacks. but the side effects of going on it and coming off it are atrocious. if it werent for those, i woudl think that ssri's make for a good stop-gap measure, somethign to make life manageable enough for you to get your shit in order (ie exercise more, get more sun, sort out job/money stressors, etc)... but going on and coming off of them is so hard on the body. i also plan on getting some crystallized/candied ginger to snack on a bunch when i do go off it, since nausea seems to be my predominant side effect i took 10mg this afternoon after my first post before crashing for a few hours (ok i took a gravol/anti nausea pill too, but they only work for so long) and it is -ridiculous- how much better i feel. i reeeeally dont like being dependant on a drug like this. if i start getting panic attacks again, well.... ill probably stay on a 10mg dose and see if that helps at least take the edge off them enough for me. sigh, i dont want to be one of those people who needs drugs to function in the world (my best friends dad is like that, hes on paxil for severe depression and has tried to go off a few times , never with success)
Do you sleep well Kayleigh? And what's it for? Is the anxiety pretty constant like GAD or is it more panic attacks like you said? And how often?
why not just raw ginger root? it's probably cheaper, and you can do more with it. really good for you.
In general panic attacks are usually brought forth by some kinda stimuli... even if it's not something you consciously recognize. Usually benzodiasapines are much more effective for treating panic attacks. They aren't as popular with a lot of doctors though, because they're pretty fun and very addictive. It's a lot like a booze pill, in the sense that they both effect chains of GABA, which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It makes you calm. If you do decide to go off, I would suggest a couple things. You can increase the amount of GABA in your body in several ways. Firstly a good sleep cycles essential. There are a few tricks you can use to coaz your body into creating more GABA as well. One of them is to take melatonin before bed. It metabolises into both GABA and Serotonin. It'll get you to sleep, and you wake up without feeling drugged up. Exercise will also highly increase the amount of GABA available to you. It might also help to find someone you trust you can talk to, or attend therapy if theres some stuff you feel that's causing the panic attacks. Either way good luck.
Lode I have to say I am very impressed with the information you have posted and the help you are trying to give her. You seem like a very smart kind guy. Here are some natural ways to increase your GABA and Serotonin levels. Sometimes they work however be patient. It may take up to a week to see the difference. SAMe St. John's Wort = In Germany this is actually prescribed as an antidepressant instead of prozac. I take 4 300mg tablets a day. Yes I have seen a difference but not as much as if I was actually taking prozac DL-Phenylalanine - I take this too and it helps. Works on chronic pain and depression Do you take any kinds of Omega 3's or a multi vitamin? What are your eating habits and exercise habits like? Diet and exercise play a HUGE roll in helping combat panic/depression. Catnip tea or tablets are very helpful with nausea. Catnip isn't just for cats. It helps calm the stomach. This helped me recently. Maybe it could help you too. Scroll down. It has some great suggestions to help plus other ailments on the top right that natural medicines help. He also suggests pharm meds but it's worth to try the natural first. http://amenclinics.com/ac/waystohelp.php?refWays=anx_depression
Back in Victorian times people were hooked on worse things like laudanum, opium, heroin, chloral...and of course booze has been around forever for people to self medicate with.
no to raw ginger because i cant handle the taste of it raw, i mean, its good but it burns my mouth liek a sonofaho peanuts, you cant take st johns wort when taking ssris, it can cause some very bad reactions from what ive heard. about a month after done with ssri's, st johns wort can be an option again, but nto before. lodeydear, been getting pretty good sleep lately actually. got near 8 hours last night, 5 during the day (cam ehome sick), etc... i go to bed at midnight, get up at 8, and it can take me some extra time to fall asleep on occasion (ive had insomnia off and on forever) but i usually get at least 7 hours in. my bf likes to black out the room because he works graveyards and thus sleeps during the day, i move the curtains around so there is some light but when i wake up its often not in bright light and therefore sometimes harder for me to get up though and yeah, it was panic attacks, not general anxiety type crap. i started having panic attack sin like grade 7, but they normally werent all that bad til this year. ihad a bunch in late dec/early jan, then they went away (school and work stress) and then i had a bunch a couple months ago again (including the worst one ive ever had) from work/money stress
