DON'T KILL ME!!!! im talking about frogstomp to neon ballroom (some of diorama) forget that they ever made young modern i honestly thought this was going change/save the world neon ballroom is awesomely heavy and dramatic, tis amazing anybody else feel the same way?
haha. Dude, they are not by any means bad, but what on earth would lead you to believe that they would change the world? Did they do anything innovative or challenging to their audience ever? Wasn't their basic thing that they were very talented young musicians who made catchy post-grunge songs and got pretty popular as interest in "hard" rock faded in the waning 90's?
It all comes down to context, I think. In Australia, they were considered pretty cutting edge around the time of Neon Ballroom. Mainly because, they came from Newcastle city which is a working class town where beer fuelled rock is the main staple. To make an orchestral rock album like Neon Ballroom (well before anyone had heard of the Arcade Fire, mind you) was pretty mind blowing to see, from a bunch of factory and coal miner kids. Still, in spite of that, I didnt really expect them to change to world, but a lot of locals did. Neon Ballroom is a great album. Emotion Sickness was a big single over here which did really well. The drama in that song is really gripping. Anything after Neon Ballroom is horrible and should be burned and buried in a very deep pit, but everything before and up to it is great.
I love Frogstomp, that was a brilliant album. I loved every track on that, serious good album. Can't believe they were only 15 when they made it. but then daniel johns went a bit peculiar....I still love a few tracks off the other albums too though....freak...ana's song...the greatest view...
i feel like young modern is just as great as any of their other albums. maybe even better. all of the songs on young modern are equally as awesome, in my opinion. silverchair is amazing and always has been.
Young Modern is there only real legitimate piece of work. Anything before it is mindless crap. Real songwriting trumps chunky riffs.
I think each of their albums is good in its own way. For instance, Frogstomp was an amazing debut, considering the members of the band were still in high school when they recorded it. The structure, content and technical skill is more realized than the average high school band that plays birthday parties and the like. It showed that the band had a lot of promise. The sound of Freak Show was heavier and more powerful, and also not disappointing. Neon Ballroom and Diorama were masterpieces, in my opinion. In both, the members explored what they could do with music, and tried something new. Young Modern is an extension of that, I think. I watched an interview of Daniel Johns where he said he studied pop music and structure, which Young Modern was inspired by. There are a lot of instances on the album where the band is pulling a Bowie, as well. I understand why many fans don't like the newer material, or the material where they began to stray from their original sound. However, it's admirable that they aren't trying to release the same album over and over again. It's admirable that they want to try different sounds and experiment. Whether or not the result is good or bad, at least they aren't playing it safe (a.k.a. boring). That was longer than I thought it would be.
