As a musician, and a musician that improvises 95% of what he plays, I must say that this is completely not true and that the possibilities of music are almost infinite.

I mean obviously, if pop music is unoriginal, is because they don't have enought imagination, or they don't listen to their inner voice.

I mean if you look at it, popular music is basically based on about 5 instruments roughly, and 3 scales. Guitar, piano, bass, drums, voice are the instruments and major, minor and blues are the scales. No wonder, they have difficulty finding something new! I'm not saying it's bad. Not at all...

But a dorian melodic song based on a 11/8 riff and a clarinett solo doubled by an amplified bouzouki has never been tried. Nor has a harpichord playing the lead singer's part accompanied by 3 bass guitars and a lute... I could go on with examples of what has never been experimented for ever....

I have looked past mainstream garbage, thats how i have been able to find a handful of good artists in this day and age.

If i only described bad rappers in my post then you tell me one single rapper who doesnt have at least one song about fucking some bitch, shooting someone, or killing someone.

If you can think of one rapper who doesnt have at least one song like that then i will retract my statement and make it this 'Bad rappers are by far in the abundance with perhaps one or two who actually sing about things in a positive light instead of just making music meant to depress people'

Radiohead.....ugh dont get me started on them. Their tactic of selling their album on the net for 'whatever price you wanna pay' or some shit was just recycled from one of the only artists that is any good nowadays and that is Joe Purdy.

Joe has released ten albums and you can listen to them all in full on his website for free, you are given the option to pay for his music if you want but only if you want.

If music was any good in todays age then why would we need to look so very hard to find a handful of artists with amazing songs, past all the unfathomable tripe.

Take this for example, how many albums can you think of released in the past 20 years or so that you can listen to all the way through and love every single track the same. And how many bands or artists have started out great, then just got corrupted by fame and money.

    Lost prophets to name one.
    Eminem to name another.

Flame me if you want but im sure im not alone in the things i have said.

    What good artists?

Misogyny isn't exclusively in rap you know. Aesop Rock for one.

Which has no bearing on them being one of the most creative bands of all time.

Joe has released ten albums and you can listen to them all in full on his website for free, you are given the option to pay for his music if you want but only if you want.

Because there's more music than ever. More crap, more good.

I'm not flaming you, sadly many, many people agree with you.
    Here's 10 of my favorites:
    The Cold Vein-Cannibal Ox
    Kill The Moonlight-Spoon
    Bone Machine-Tom Waits
    Wind In The Wires-Patrick Wolf
    Loveless-My Bloody Valentine
    Homogenic-Bjork
    Boxer-The National
    Labor Days-Aesop Rock
    Doolittle-Pixies
    Ok Computer-Radiohead

Another thing I would point out is that people often generalise the state of Rock music and Pop music to the state of Music as a whole. Seriously there is more to music than Rock, what about Jazz? what about Indian music? what about Classical music? what about Arabian music?

The Jazz Fest here in Montreal has given me the opportunity to see that young musicians nowadays are better than ever. But they're not playing Rock.

I love rock, but do not think that because Rock sucks nowadays, music as a whole sucks too. Maybe we've got to expand our musical taste to find something new and refreshing.

    Expanding on Rap:
Why do you care if there's talk of bitches/money etc? Plenty of Rock bands say the same things, it's about the music and the delivery more often than not.

There's no need to flame you because I don't agree, right :D. I only agree with you on Radiohead, and I don't dig their sound neither. I'm also not blown away by the bands I know on Proggyman's list there (don't even know all), but I agree with him about the fact that there are lots of good stuff to be found (obviously even for each is his own :p ).
I also noticed that of nowadays bands I have more often that I like just one album than more stuff, like in the old days. Not all bands though. I can list enough bands with albums I can listen whole way through.. Also, there are lots of bands that don't change their sound for money, man. Just look further. Lots of those bands are noticed on these forums.

besides all the crap there is out there, there's tons and tons of other stuff to listen to . provided you don't count on radio to get it from, and you look around using the www to find new things, there's lots to listen to.

Music will keep evolving, mixing new technology, and old classic sounds, creating new sounds to make fresh and new music.

Good music isn't dead. It's just a little harder to find.

Fact is, nowadays, for an artist to make it "big", they'll need an image that their fans will envy. They'll have to dress a certain way, act a certain way, and play their music a certain way. Very limited artists still have the ability to do their own thing and get recognized for it without "selling out".

on the other hand, there are tons of artists out there that still do what they do, and are much more comfortable knowing they're playing music for themselves and the fans who truly appreciate good music.

This. I am just grateful we live in a day and age where it is possible to use the net to discover artists you normally wouldn't. There will always be good musicians out there, making original and listenable music. There's really not much excuse for people who stick to mainstream radio, big music retailers, MTV and all that, then and complain that music sucks now.

So people don't think music today is original? That is one of the most retarded things I have ever heard. Just because it's not to you specific tastes doesn't mean that it doesn't have meaning. There is more good music out there today than anytime in the past. You just have to look for it slightly, and a lot of it is slightly mainstream too.

First of all rap is doing so well right now and constantly dripping with originality. If someone doesn't think it's "true" music then I want to see how they do with a set of turntables and a microphone. Because I could guarantee that they won't be able to make shit.

Good hip hop acts of today (and they don't sing about bitches and money):
    Brother Ali
    Aesop Rock
    Atmosphere
    Murs
    Doomtree
    The Roots

and good artists to check out that are quite amazing (even if you're not a huge fan of them, they are original!):
The Avalanches, Aphex Twin, The Arcade Fire, Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, Beck, Boards of Canada, Broken Social Scene, Bon Iver, Cloud Cult, dredg, Emancipator, Explosions in the Sky, Free the Robots, Matisyahu, Mum, Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, Shpongle, Slightly Stoopid, Wilco, Wookiefoot

And I did some work and uploaded a few songs

    Wookiefoot-Be The Change
    http://media.putfile.com/Wookiefoot--Be-The-Change

    Atmosphere- Sunshine
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvY38j7JdCk

Emancipator- Soon it Will be Cold Enough to Build Fires
    http://media.putfile.com/Soon-it-will-be

    Cloud Cult- Pretty Voice
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMpOhwUTUwc

    Arcade Fire- Rebellion (Lies)
    http://media.putfile.com/Rebellion-Lies-Arcade-Fire

    Mew- Am I Wry? No
    http://media.putfile.com/Am-I-WryNo

Actually listen to them and try to tell yourself this isn't original. Please respond too so I know this wasn't all in vain.
