Oh, please help I work at my church each year for a "Harvest Festival" on Halloween night that helps keep kids off the not-so-safe streets within our church's neighborhood. Every year my husband & I go as something different, and we've been Marian & Robin Hood, Rhett & Scarlett, Arthur & Guenevere, Highlanders, Raggedy Ann & Andy... you get the idea. Every year, at least a few people ask us "So when are you gonna dress as hippies?" Unfortunately we were born just a few years too late (1973 & 75) to actually REMEMBER the hippie era, so all we have to go on is photos. What I would really like to do, is go this year as a couple of hippies. But not as "retro" hippies, but the real deal. I have a bit of experience in costume reconstruction & clothing research, and I think what I'm looking for in my own costume is the crocheted vest & patchwork/batik prairie style skirt "look," and for my husband I was thinking of altering a pair of his jeans... and can't seem to get much farther. Is there anyone here that remembers what a young-30's (or possible mid/late 20's since we both look just a bit younger than we are) couple would have worn? Or does anyone have any ideas / photos they would be willing to share? I'm looking for head-to-toe, what we OUGHT to look like... but it DOES have to be appropriate for working around preschool through high-school age kids Thanks so much!!! love, mom
Hello! Rain here, your guide to DIY Fashion at About.com. I've also sold 'hippie' style clothing at many festivals and stores. Recently, I posted a few how-to's on how to make some of the hippie styles that I used to make. This is a very basic skirt and apron set. There is not pattern needed, only measurements and cut fabric. Apron Top Drawstring A-Line Skirt Hope this helps. there is also a forum and contact info for me at the site in case you have any questions.
