I can crochet but I can't knit. I have tried teaching myself and going to website but I just can't seem to get it. How did you learn? Did someone teach you or did you teach yourself? Any suggestions would be great appriciated.
You might want to check out your local yarn shops or craft stores. Often times they will have knitting classes or would be able to tell you where knitting classes are offered in your area.
I learned to knit as a child, but had abandoned it for many years. In my early 20's, I got a job @ a craft store where I had to know how to either knit or crochet, so I made it a point to do both, so I taught myself. With crochet, the best thing to do is pick a stitch (like double crochet, or whatever) and just practice the crap out of it. Make a load of granny squares. Put together a scarf entirely out of that stitch - stuff like that. Your local yarn or craft store will also usually help you out. Patience and practice also helps, though!
oops sorry re-read it... well then the same applies to knitting. Start with something basic and work your way up. Make a scarf. Knit a hat. Something. It's the best way to learn, that whole practice-makes-perfect thing. The biggest problem btwn knitters and crocheters is that one group has a hard time figuring out how to hold the yarn and needles, because it just feels awkward and clumsy, because you're so used to doing your own craft. Once you get over that clumsiness, then you're good to go.
my friend is letting me borrow her "vogue knitting" book. its old. but its has more info than you'd expect to need to know.. if can find a copy, i suggest that.
lol wildflowereyes, i have a "vogue knitting dictionary" that i refer to constantly. ive known how to crochet since i was little, but i only recently learned to knit. a website taught me. i hold the yarn the same way i do for crocheting, so that wasnt an issue. once i understood how to make a stitch, it got easier really fast. the first thing i made was a pair of leg warmers.
Just take two knitting needle things, then blah and thingy and stuff.. Okay I can't explain to you how to knit. Visit a library^^ they mostly have something about handcrafting and such. Good luck!
I think that being taught in person is the best way -- but there are lots of great instructional videos on youtube :]
Here is some information on the web that will get you started. A couple of my co-workers run knitting and crochet sites at About.com. That's where I learned my crochet stitches and a few patterns more than seven years ago! How to Crochet How to Knit - I am pretty sure that she has an e-course, too that will send new stitches to your email daily. Hope this helps! -Rain Your Guide to DIY Fashion at About.com diyfashion.about.com
