    Hey now folks!
i just wanted to pass on a serious warning to all pet owners.
i recently noticed fleas on my cat and immediatly went to the store and bought some flea shampoo. The product i bought was Hartz flea and tick shampoo for cats. Within hours of bathing my cat, he became completely lethargic. i took him to the vet and they admitted him overnight in their animal hospital. He had to be kept on IV fluids and almost didn't survive. Test showed abnormal function in his liver and kidneys. Consistent with a cat that had been poisoned. i followed the directions on the bottle completely, my cat did not ingest any of the shampoo and was rinsed well. He is home recovery now, although his balance is still off and we do not know if the liver/kidney damage is permanant.
i use only nontoxic cleaning supplies/detergents and don't use any pesticides in my yard and garden...so why i bought a shampoo that contained a dangerous pesticide is beyond me. The Hartz bottle did not mention the possibilty of liver/kidney damage or death. It had small print that said if adverse reactions occur see a vet.
After my cat became sick, i did a search online for adverse reactions to flea shampoo since Hartz didn't list them. Instead, i came across a website called http://www.hartzvictims.org Apparently, my cats reaction is very common with the Hartz brand flea and tick treatments. Hartz brand products are responsible for the death of countless pets, we were lucky! i'm just passing on this link to help inform others.

Thanks for the warning. I just bathed my dog the other night with hartz flea shampoo. I'll check out the website......and the shampoo had a very minimal effect on the fleas, if any:mad: Best wishes to your kitty!

I didn't realize that Hartz had caused so many health/safety problems, but I did know that I don't use Hartz products because they don't work very well.
I'm sorry your kitty got hurt and I hope he's okay!

While we're on the topic of warnings, I'll recommend not using over-the-counter top-spot type flea & tick treatments. A few years ago, I used one on my cat... I don't remember what brand, it may have been Hartz for all I remember. He started puking like crazy until I gave him a bath, scrubbing the area where you apply the stuff.

I've never seen an adverse reaction to brands like Frontline, which you have to get from a vet, but I will never again consider using the stuff you can get at any old pet supply place.
