If it is in plants and our own brains then it isn't something we have to consume to get high... We can trip on DMT in our sleep so how is it a drug?

Just because it's all ready in your body doesnt mean it's not a drug

Because while it is a chemical in the brain the natural levels in the body are far too low to do anything except for in death when a flood of it is released they believe. Once it is synthesized outside the body and can provide those psychedelic effects it is a drug. Just like if they had a straight up serotonin pill you could take, that would be a drug.

You guys know that the whole thing about tripping on DMT while you sleep isn't true right? That's not what dreams are, they are generated by very specific electrical activity in the brain. We currently don't know why we have DMT (in TRACE amounts) in our brain.

Also, there is arsenic naturally in your body, but that still makes it a toxin. Same with drugs, doesn't matter where it comes from, drugs are defined as chemicals which have an effect on the human mind and/or body.

Anything you take to chemically alter your brain is a drug

since when did they discover is has nothing to do with dreams? and saying that dreams are "very specific electrical activity in the brain" is the most vague answer you could have given considering everything that goes on in the brain is caused by "specific electrical activity". almost everything we know about dreams are just theories.

god i freakin hate people who say because it comes from a plant/human/whatever it makes it not a drug. it may not be the case, but to me it just seems like thats what self richeous people say to make them selves sleep easier at nigh.

True AND false. All of the activity that takes place in our brains involves electricity, even the way drugs affect us. Drugs alter the electrical currents in a way that affects our mood, as well as the way we see things and the way we think about things. The changes in the electrial activity in our brain are what cause the psychedelic effects, but the drugs are what causes the changes in electrical activity.

But how can something in our own body be considered a drug and illegal? Does that make every human a criminal cuz their brain contains an illegal substance?

no, just because the government laws are stupids doesnt make something not a drug.

You summed it up the best, it's all theories. However, some theories have evidence to back them up . . . the DMT --> dreams theory has 0 evidence, although this is because it would require in vivo tests on the brain of human beings and that is currently not allowed.

Let me state again for the record. The theory that DMT causes dreams has no evidence behind it and has never been tested. "since when did they discover is has nothing to do with dreams?" They never discovered it had anything to do with dreams in the first place. It's an urban myth that has been spread around as "knowledge".

Well now you're getting into legality, and that system simply fails. Any system that has marijuana illegal but cigarettes and alcohol legal is obviously deeply flawed.

It shouldn't be illegal anyway. The government is retarded, and there is no rational explanation for anything they do. lol

Besides, there are only trace amounts of DMT is our body, at any given time, and it produces minimal effects, compared to the effects of a DMT trip. I THINK the DMT in our bodies is metabolized into melatonin, or it may be the other way around; not sure.

I'm not sure about the differences in structure, but I think 5-MeO-DMT is much less visual than DMT, but DMT is not as potent as 5-MeO-DMT. Not sure though, as I've never tripped on either of them. FYI, there is an entire forum on this site dedicated to DMT, if you didn't know that already. Some of the people there will be able to tell you everything you wanna know about DMT and 5-MeO-DMT.

Here's how I look at DMT.
The brain is thought to release it in large amounts at the moment of death. The shamans who drink DMT yeilding plant preperations in South America claim that they live where time and space do not exist. They have attained immortality of the Self.
Therefor, put it together, and it appears that at the moment of death, during this potential flood, we taste 'eternity', or, the complete absence of a screen of personality. That is the Self, the soul, Brahama, enligthenment. But you can have it now while alive by forcing yourself to go through the dying process and coming out alive. Same with LSD and magic mushrooms, many users experience an absence of connection to sense organs as well as a sensation of time dissolving completley.
Now, as for dreams. Im not one of the people who puts hope into DMT possibly being proven someday to cause dreams. Dreams are electrical, sure, but at it's root it is vibration, waves rippling through the mind during sleep. Now, many yogi's during the past several thousand years, have claimed that there is no difference between waking life and asleep life, save that when you are not in total Self control, you go into a sort of 'astral realm' during sleep and can not control the fruit your mind bears. Mostly it's confusing as hell. But if one practices meditation, one begins to move into that very state of mind while actually remaining fully awake, though the consciousness is absorbed elsewhere. Universal Mind, God, Mind Essence, etc.
So it may be revealed to us as social organism someday, that life, rather existence itself, being composed of vibration energy that branches out into the gravitational, electromagnetic, and atomic energies, is nothing more than thought, or dreams, rippling across the mind of.........hmmmm.......God? Or whatever you choose to name that which is inexplainable but experienced by some.
    God Bless +
