Poppies growing in the wild? (US)

    Supposedly there's a patch of like 50+ near me. Does this sound reasonable? I know they are pretty hardy but I've never seen one anywhere (excluding pictures) except in someones garden once.

    I guess they are by a river. Also the person who told me says when she was younger they used to stomp on them and seeds would come out.
