So... I'm just thinking about the coming year.... and I always hear about "anti-ocala" in february... but I don't remember where this was supposed to be....

is there a regular location for a regional going on at the same time as ocala??

I went to the Ocala gathering every year for 5 years, and am still in close touch with FL focalizers & vocalizers for the past 3 or so years, and I've never heard about "anti-Ocala", though wherever the gathering is in the Ocala NF, often as not there's some folks who decide this is the wrong place, and have their thing somewhere else.

even though they should because FL sucks, everyone gets bugs, gets sick and, I bet somewhere like alabama, or Lousianna, would be just as good, shit it doesn't snow in there, and it is fairly warm in alabama and lousiana. Shit southern arkansas would work too.

    No, you got bugs.
    No, you got sick.

NF in AL is in the mountains...weather's not suitable there even in March.

Maybe...still colder & wetter than FL, though, NF is in northwest part of the State, not on the Gulf Coast.

No NF in southern AR, and winters in the Ozarks can be brutal.....Ice storms.

i don't care either or any way because FL sucks nuts, and I was NOT the "ONLY" one that got bugs. as I recall the bugs that most folks got were traveling bugs and went from FL to New Orleans, lower or upper 9th where many folks went after ocala to help in the disaster area.

The Florida Trail starts at the entrance road to the Juniper Springs recreation area.Hikers stay with the orange blazes to the cool waters of Hidden Pond or you can hike in from Pats Island. This is a good swimming hole. I'll be camping in the oaks on the far side of the pond at the Rainbow in 2009. To keep your gear someone must allways be in camp. Your thoughts?

    what, at like forkpoint?

stuff gets stolen everywhere you go... it's sad that it also happens in rainbow...

I had a laptop stolen from me at my first gathering, which happened to be in Ocala... however, if I had a laptop again, I wouldn't be afraid to bring it with me to the woods. I know better how to be 'safe' at a gathering now.

I don't have any particular gripe with Ocala... I think it's like anything else. It's what you make it.

i have never had anything more then a lighter stolen at any gathering,EVER.the trick is just plug into a kitchen and keep your camp close to it.within sight is best.and out of a dozen or so ocala gatherings i have only ever left with bugs once.and that was when i still hugged random hippies.hmm, don't do that anymore and haven't ever had bugs since,go figure.and anyone who thinks it don't snow in alabama or lousiana hasn't spent much time in the woods there.

I know that ice stroms occur more commonly than snow, in Louisanna, and alabama, and that it definately gets cold, but shit it's not like FL doesn't get cold though, I mean shit, and yeah once I stopped hugging random hippies I haven't got bugs since that time in FL. Plus I have got rid of most of my dreads and wear a hat more often, but either way, FL still sux

So true, Turnup !!!!! This should be the year of the linear site. The one that A-Camp goes to Lake Mary or the FR ends since there is a Small Bus Village and just enough room to park. I'll be bringing a boat to cross the lake & just offered a large Beautiful Paint (Horse) in case we ever have a "Hidden Pond" 2 mile hike in again (Those were the days!)

Ocala is the ONLY National Forest approved by Florida Family. Please teach & pass on the True Living Light!!!!

Sorry Forkman, It's not nice to fool Mother Rainbows. Still mad love for ya and hope you bring your colorful self, Suzie and Sadie to the True Rainbow Cathedral.........The Ocala National Forest.

ther is no such thing as anti-ocala, i think what you are refering to is a split that has occured in past years of those who do not want to be at the permitted site and chose to gather in another location. (wich is smaller andyou can find out were by going to the permitted site) Sites are different every year and are chosen (out of about five different choices) at vision councle in november. As far as A-Cola goes , it is not a replacement for ocala, just a stepping stone for familly on there way out of florida, and will be held right after ocala. last years was the first. it was small with a few kitchens and dispite the origional site being flooded by the rains, we all had a great time and beter focalizing and planning will prevent that from happening again....live and learn:D.. the secondary site ended up being perfect with great swimming holes.

AND OCALA ROCKS!!!!!!..LOVE'N ALL MY FLORIDA FAMILLY...
AND HEY TO ALL THE KIDS IN ST AUGUSTINE I HAD A GREAT TIME!!!:cheers2: AARRRRRRRRRR

Warriors & Teachers are needed to show why Florida Family HASNT used North Florida forest's. It was sad MOST Family disregarded Tradition and never even asked why.

Prayers for North Florida seem to be all thats left.

    Please learn respect Family.

:confused:Maybe i'm missunderstanding what you mean but whats wrong with North Florida forests? i know Ocala is the traditional spot and i love ocala no matter what anybody says, but whats wrong with creating a safe place for people to rest for a bitt during there travels? if it were on private land would you feel different?
Why doesn't familly use North Florida?
    inlighten me....

I am so glad Folk's are asking why. BLESS YOU AND HHB !!!!!!

Years.....Many Moons ago while scouting ALL forests we were smart enough to ask the Benefits and Harm done to Biologist's, Scientist's and those employed to protect the land.
I was glad to see the same reasons are still there and posted on the Internet.

    Lets start with:

RARE AND ENDANGERED SPECIES IN THE NATIONAL FOREST
    Animals:

    Florida black bear
    fox squirrel
    Cooper's hawk
    Florida pine snake
    flatwoods salamander
    Apalachicola king snake
    Woodville cave crayfish
    red-cockaded woodpecker

    Plants:
    karst pond xyris
    Panhandle meadowbeauty
    Chapman's crownbeard
    wire-grass gentian
    Florida skullcap
    Drummond's yellow-eyed grass
    scare-weed
    West's flax
    Apalachicola dragonhead
    Florida beargrass
    Chapman's butterwort
    Godfrey's blazing star
    Ashe's magnolia
Harper's beauty (found only in the forest)

Private land in the same area.....No to that too.

    The Protector's are still right:

Residential development on privately owned lands within and adjacent to the National Forest's boundary is one of the biggest threats to the forest. These private holdings have a significant influence on how the public lands can be managed. For example, homes at the edge of the forest make it difficult for the Forest Service to undertake prescribed burns. A number of roads, as well as electricity and natural gas transmission lines, pass through the National Forest, fragmenting its habitat and threatening wildlife, especially the Florida black bear.

Other threats to the Apalachicola National Forest include degradation of outdoor recreation opportunities by overuse, timbering and seedling planting; increased human access; pollution of surface waters; pressures to increase timber sales; and disturbance of wilderness areas and archaeological and historic sites by road construction, recreation and maintenance facility construction.

In recent years, the U.S.D.A. Forest Service's management practices have placed less emphasis on maximizing timber harvests and more on conserving the mature forest needed to provide habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.

I could go on even more with:

    * River and estuary SEVERE problems
    * Endangered Fish and Waterlife
    * Insects

If ya need links to verify.......... I will gladly provide.

Florida Family has been trying to preserve those particular Forests for the Survival of ALL
nature. Yes, we are Nature too, Sad because Nature is destroying Nature.

    PR

    Recommendations

Minimize disturbance of riparian areas, wetlands, and significant ecological and recreational corridors.

Protect the habitat of the red-cockaded woodpecker.

Protect the route of the Florida National Scenic Trail and safeguard its use during hunting season.

Acquire Tates Hell Swamp in Franklin County and undeveloped inholdings.
