What are your thoughts on people who train their dogs to be vicious protectors of their children? I don't mean vicious as in the dog is always snarling and barking and snapping.

I mean "vicious protector" as an entity. As in if somebody ever approached their children the dog would then begin the snarling, barking, and snapping.

Risky and dangerous or amazing way to make sure nobody ever fucks with your kids?

i used to know some idiots (my exhusband friends) that tried to do this. their damn dogs began to fight each other in the living room one night. they knocked over my then two year old daughter and were fighting ON TOP of my kid! i ran over to pull her up and one of those dogs bit me...... instantly both dogs stopped fighting and rolled on their backs.. (i'm something of a dog whisperer and both dogs had mad respect for me) these idiots had two small children themselves and were high or tweaking all the time... i didn't talk much to them after this happened. they seemed to not care at all about the dogs fighting or biting me..

There are breeds of dogs which will naturally protect their pack. If you're interested in a dog like that.. that's fine, but those dogs need to be especially trained and socialized.

Aggressive behavior should never be promoted in training a dog.

I have a doberman mix who naturally guards, she will attack you if you come at me unless I tell her not too. I've never trained her to do so, it's in her breed.

Anyone who trains their animals to be vicious for whatever reason does not deserve to own them. They are a danger, not only to the children themselves, but the public as a whole.

I've known a few dogs who protected the children, but no one trained them to do that. They do it because they feel like the children belong to them.

My sister had a yellow lab that she could let out to play in the yard with the kids. If anyone had tried to grab them, they would have lost an arm. The dog would also bark if a car pulled up in the driveway, but not if she knew the car. No one trained her that way.

Yeah, this is one of the reasons why Ontario has banned pitbulls and any dog that is considered dangerous by law or has had a history of bitting someone is forced to wear a muzzle in public.

It's because 70% of dogs in animal shelters are pittbulls, rottwheiers, etc. People get a tough dog, teach it how to rough house, and all because they want a tough dog to "protect" their children and show up the neighbours. They have no interest in training the dog or properly socializing a dog and they end up neglected in shelters or being put down.

I hate it when dogs are trained to be aggressive at all. It scares me. I have a friend at work and I refuse to pursue a friendship with her outside of work because she has a rottweiler who's not aggressive towards her or people she's familiar with, but hates males. I don't care if I'm female, if she has something against anyone at all, I automatically don't trust her.
