So I went up to my local college today to discuss tuition, aid, grants,.... you know; the mean green money situation. You see, I've been wanting to go to school for some time now, and am slowly but surely working my way to it. That is untill I found out that it's going to cost me an astonishing $345, PER CREDIT!!!!!! Each class is worth 3 credits. Yeah, thats over $1000 per class, not including books, utencils, etc. What the Fuck!!! Problem #1: I'm a high school drop out that lives in Ohio and has a New Mexico state deploma. Problem #2: To be eligable for any aid or loans I have to use my latest tax return. Yeah..... um.... I did'nt do my taxes last year....... or, uh......the year before.....(gulp).... Problem #3: I weld 3rd shift in a fuckin factory and can barely make rent, let alone eat healthy...... or pay such stagering amounts. Problem # 4: I DON'T WANT TO WORK IN A FACTORY MY WHOLE LIFE.....like the rest of my family. Oh the world is a crual abyss that laughs in my face and knocks me down every time i try to stand. I don't know where I have been...(Oh yeah.... hitch-hiking) but when did it become comman practice to fuck people out of following their dreams? Or is that just the American way of life.....
Are you an Ohio state resident? If not, do whatever you need to become one (it's easy, my boyfriend became a Virginia resident just by registering to vote. His address was on it, after 6 months or a year he was a resident). Tuition at a community college is much cheaper instate, here its 85 per credit, 275 out of state.
I was born and raised in Ohio, so yeah, I'm a resident. The nearist community college is about 30 miles away, and I refuse to drive with gas prices like they are. Maybe online college is where it's at.....
Sorry I didn't realize you were speaking of university, I thought you mentioned community college somewhere in there. My bad!! Yeah, I know nothing about university, I'm figuring I'll cross that bridge when I get to it The community college I'm going to however has LOTS of classes online, and I think most do. I know it is best to avoid for profit schools and stick with schools based offline that offer online classes. However, most require at least an orientation class/lecture or some display you'll be able to handle online curricular. I personally think it's worth driving a distance a few times to be able to have online classes from a place that will be considered legit. Good luck!! School is so confusing
College CAN be affordable. Think of it this way...it would be cheaper to enroll in community college and then transfer to a bigger college or university. You could look into taking all of your classes in one day per week since community college is 30 miles away. The travel would still be cheaper than paying more for the university. I would suggest taking online classes until you get the feel of college because online courses take a lot of disipline. I graduate this December. I worked my ass off at making it affordable and accomplishable. Anyone can do it. I went to community college first. You can applied for aid even if you haven't paid your taxes, but of course you will most likely not get as much.
Without paying my taxes you say...... hmmm... Yeah, I have some credits at a community college I went to in New Mexico, about 9 credits I think.
You're 22. At 26 your parents are no longer factored into the FAFSA. You should do what I did, go on the rainbow trail for a few years, travel the country that way, meet people and get an idea of what this country is really about. Sure, it might piss off your parents a bit, but you'll have tons of memories that you can write papers about. I have a 3.85 GPA at my college...and I have a full ride with financial aid....just an idea...
If you're interested in teaching there are government incentives to get teachers into cities, which include loan forgiveness up to $40,000 and 20% off of housing. Plus you get sign on bonuses depending on your specialty.
I have not lived with my parents for 6 years. I was booted out when i was 16, and I 've lived in 5 states in the past 2 years. I've done my share of traveling, and am just ready to buckle down, and start schooling...... I just need to research some things..... see if I can't find some answers
Lets see you were born and raised in Ohio so your a resident but you've live in 5 states in the last 2 years. Makes no sense? So you've been running around the country since you were 16 after your parents got tired of your shit, so you show up a your local college telling them you want the American dream, I'm ready. "Oh the world is a crual abyss that laughs in my face and knocks me down every time i try to stand. I don't know where I have been...(Oh yeah.... hitch-hiking) but when did it become comman practice to fuck people out of following their dreams?" It doesn't seem like you've every tried to stand until you got a job and found that working for a living isn't much fun. So not knowing any other thing about I'd be enclind not to believe you. Why should I as a tax payer give you money to take another six months of classes and move on. I don't want to fuck you out of your dreams I just want to make sure it is your dream.
Well, first of all, Mr. Tax Payer, my parents did'nt get tired of my shit, I got tired of theirs. They are losers, lazy, welfare hogging meth heads. They were not always like this, but I'm guessing you were not always a know it all...... or were you? Second, Mr. Tax Payer, I have never officially changed my address to any of the other states I've lived in, so as far as the United States government is aware, I AM still an Ohio citizen. Third, and most important, Mr. Tax Payer, were do you see me asking for money in this thread...? Were do you see me asking YOU for YOUR money, Mr. Tax Payer? THis whole thread is just me venting and looking for alternitives to a university. I'm not asking for any money...... just advice. And for the record, Mr. Tax Payer, I've been standing on my own sence I was 16, working, paying bills, and still finding the time to have fun. And I'm just trying to find my way into a place that passed me by a few years back, with the idea to try and improve my self. P.S. As a tax payer, you can kiss my ass.....fucker.
Education SHOULD be free anyways. If education is free, like Europe, then we wouldn't be close to a depression. Just because he is asking for advice on how to finance his education does not mean that he wants free money. I worked my ass off working 40 hours a week and went to school full time. I applied for help and didn't get much. For system is fucked. College should be free because we are the future of our country. Our country wouldn't function without the educated. Anyways, veg man, I wish you luck. It is tough, but if I CAN do it, then anyone can do it.
Free, Europe doesn't have free education. With taxes well over 50 % you seem to misunderstand how the system works. And as for the close to depression comment that has more to do with the fact that we don't make anything anymore and without the working class working we have not base to build on. Veg man I do hope you figure out how to make it happen. Their is nothing better than education. I screwed it up when I was young in college but have had a wonderful life being a fisherman and managed to help get 3 great step kids through college with 2 through grad school. So I do believe in higher learning.
Well thank you Bumble, and I'm currently checking out some other towns/collages in the state. We'll see what I comw up with.
