How many people (if any) do yoga with weight loss as the primary focus. Don't get me wrong I love the mediation benefits but I started for weight loss.

While there are some vigorous yogas out there that will tax you physically, yoga for weight loss is a rough road.

You should use the yoga for the visualization of how you wish to look. You must be realistic in this practice. But this needs to be balanced with physical activity thats going to up your metabolism rate. Its important that you get this done first. You must increase your aerobic endurance by sustained activity. 10 minutes, twice a day to start.

When you're tired from biking or walking or whatever, sitting for meditation will come easier for most.

I usually do hot yoga (they put heaters in the room and it gets up to around 95 degrees) and I feel I benefit a lot from it, especially my health. I also do other types of yoga but I really enjoy hot yoga when I'm diggin a solid work out.

I do basic Hatha yoga and I just have the room at whatever temp feels right to me. I generally do it before 30 minutes of cardio though.

    Thanks though xexon.

Yoga is a powerful tool to burn calories and return to or maintain shape as it offers a holistic and versatile means of losing weight. Many people also choose to combine yoga with running, walking or other aerobic exercise in order to reach their weight loss goals. Ashtanga, Power Yoga, hot Yoga, Hath Yoga are recommended for weight loss.

I have used it to help with my athletic conditioning as well as visualization enhancement/.

I wouldn't use hot yoga for weight loss... I do Baptiste Yoga when I get the chance, usually every other week and it gets HOT. I sweat so much, its basically just releasing water and making you dehydrated. When I come out I feel either steady and calm, but most of the time I feel spaced out as f;[k and hungry (the hunger because of thirst)

What happens to my body when I do hot yoga for 90 minutes and I have friends who agree with me on this - you become dehydrated, even if you drink water beforehand and then do you know what happens? ..when your dehydrated your body retains water and you grow like a blimp!!!!

When I get out of class my pants are tighter even from just 90 minutes, then the next 3-4 days I gain weight, usually 2-3 pounds. My friends also comment about this as they get BLOATED as well.

Same thing with running - you get dehydrated and hungry- if you can deal with the hunger and thirst you'll be ok but even the strongest of people collapse daily into binges after exercise.

    Yoga for weight loss- YA!!
Running - better for weight loss
Hope you can handle the pressure...

When I want to loose weight I meditate more and go out in the cold as much as possible, it speads up your metabolism slower than running, doesn't dehydrate as much and you get fresh air.

PS I went to a lodge this weekend and meditated as well as hunted grouse by driving around in a truck all day. It was cold out, I didn't move much and I ate GIGANTIC meals every meal, I was puting around 5,000 cals a day into me and guess what~! I lost 10 -pounds in 3 days!! i'm not sh/tting you.
Moral of the story -eat more than you think you need, especially FATS

I've recently become a fan of a lot of Bikram poses, but as far as weight loss is concerned, it's almost exclusively your diet, 95% or more. If working out makes you eat a lot more, you'll gain weight from it. Whether running or walking, every mile you go will burn less than 200 calories. Even the most strenuous yoga classes you find will not compare with running, so picture 2 small slices of bread or a small bowl of pasta as 1 mile or 1 yoga class and you'll see what kind of effect it will have on your body. Don't starve yourself, but seriously limit your intake of calorically dense foods (fats / sugars), load up on the veggies and you'll see great results.

Very bad info, sorry to call you out... but yeah

Maybe you were fooled by water weight from a drop in sodioum and/or carbs. Were you really tracking your calories accurately? Are you familiar with livestrong.com or fitday.com? You did not lose a legit 10 pounds in 3 days, you would have needed to burn around 10,000 calories to acheive that. I'm not even sure world class endurance athletes could make that happen. I can easily lose 7 pounds of sweat in one night of basketball. That weight's not staying off for very long.

Even on Keto diets which are high fat, moderate protein and almost zero carbs you don't want to force down fat, just eat to comfort. If you're eating a lot of grains / starches like most people you need to be very careful with your fat intake. Some Omega 3 sources (flax seed, fish oil) are very helpful, other than that tread lightly.

Ya it was bizarre, I went for a run the day after the hunting and felt like garbage because of all the fats!

Your right and a good point to bring up = weight can come from alot of sources
water weight may be the easiest to lose as you said 7 lbs in one night isn't abnormal. But don't just dismiss water weight, because i've heard that in order to store fat you must first be bloated or something like if your bloated you can store fat - will have to look that up.

I'm pretty good at counting calories, i've been doing it for 10 yrs every meal every day, i think its a good tool to utilize when eating. 5,000 cals a day wasn't exzagerating, but your defffff! right, it wasn't fat it was prob water, and 1/2 muscle, 1/2 fat, proper weight loss is more like 2/3 fat loss, 1/3 muscle loss
