    Does anybody else think that The faux hawk hairstyle:

    [IMG]

    Is essentially the opposite of dreads? think about it:

    Dreads take time and patience. and, in general, people who undergo the dread
    journey become better people because they learn to be patient and more accepting.

    A faux hawk can be achieved by anybody almost immediately, and is worn by people who force their hair to look the way they want it to.

    Dreads represent thousands of years of culture and wisdom had by many ethnicities since the dawn of man. As well as the wearer's oneness with nature and themselves.

    Faux hawks take all of the cultural significance of mohawks and throw it out the window. in favour of a quick fix that focuses on image.

    I'm generalizing quite a bit here. And in no way am i saying everybody with faux hawks are shallow. It's just in my experience its those "like, totally!" types who tend to wear their hair like this.

    You're of course forgetting the facts that dreadlocks look pretty sweet...

    ...whereas `faux hawks' are in my eyes one of the stupidest looking hairstyles in the world ;)

    You know, I find this oddly amusing. Don't we (as in, a general group of those who have dreadlocks) really hate it when people assume we're druggies or dirty or homeless because we have dreads? I think assuming all these cultural reasons for people getting dreads is the same sort of thing, only shedding a positive, stereotypical light rather than a negative one. I didn't get dreads for the cultural significance, I got them because I like how they look and I love the idea of no/low maintenance hair. I also figured they'd look good on me, rather than my frizzy, un-dreaded, curly mop that had absolutely no direction or focus.

    I like mohawks, faux-hawks are kind of obnoxious (although I don't know anyone who always puts their hair in a faux-hawk). To me, a faux-hawk is like synthetic dreads. It's for someone who doesn't want to break cultural bounds and completely shave their head for the mohawk. It's someone who wants to pick and choose which style they wear which day, and doesn't want the social burden of having a mohawk in all these different kind of social situations where it may not be appropriate. Same for those who use synthetic dreads. I don't look down upon them for it.

    But, in general, I do agree that the faux-hawk looks really stupid. Mohawks, however, look awesome on the right people.

    Even when I just had long hair people would always make assumptions about my politics and my interests and it really fucked me off. There's this pub I frequent thats got a bit of a reputation for various things and every September the new crop of rock inclined university students (mostly girls, I think the boys assumed they would get killed) would come down and attempt to integrate into this pub that basically didn't want them there, they just assumed if they came down in neon tights and a motor head t-shirt they would be welcome and could do what the fuck they liked.

    Why I'm making myself sound like an arsehole then I would like to reminisce about a lad at my school who had a faux hawk in the sense that it was caused by the shape of his head, we called him peanut but more so as his name than to take the piss.

    in simple terms:

    dreads = free, open, perceptive
    hawk = wanker

    ahhh i think mexian guys look totaly hot with this hairstyle. maybe some of them are shallow and other's are not. i don't judge books by their covers. putting your hair how you like it isn't necasarily shallow. sometimes i wear certian pieces of jewelery because i like the way it looks, maybe it's a trendy piece at that, but sometimes i wear a piece of jewelery because that piece has a personal spiritual meaning. both reasons in my mind are fine. maybe someone might have a trendy hair-do, but probably they also like it- i dont think someone would put their hair in a style they didn't like just because everyone else is doing it.

    I totally agree. No need to feel superior just as you think your style is better. Personal opinion, each to his own.
    You people say dreads make you a better person. ;)

    I was gonna say....isn't it all just hair? It's on the outside, folks, not the inside. Generalizing is stupid. Instead, you should just say you don't care for the hairstyle, rather than the personality you assume goes along with it.

    I'm with springheeleddah and atage etc on this. Tomorrow I could decide to cut all my dreads off and have a fauxhawk but I'd still be the same person. I agree that there is a certain journey that must be undertaken with dreads that a person who gets synthetic or a quick cut like a hawk maybe are missing out on but unfortunately it's the generalizing tone that gets my back up.

    I want to just start a thread that says I don't care what anyone else does... I just love dreads :D
