How does a bubbler work?

How does a bubbler work on a pipe? Do you need to add water or something? And my friend told me about a bubbler for a bong or something? I don't know.

A bubbler that works as its own pipe is basically just a standard pipe with an extra chamber below the bowl for water. A glass stem goes from the bottom of the bowl into the water. The smoke goes through the stem, rises out of the water, then goes into the mouthpiece.
Bong attachements exist that do the same thing so the smoke gets filtered first.

 

Get a bubbler, fill it with water, get high, repeat.

 

Depends what kind of bubbler, I have one that you refill the water whenever you want, just unscrew the top. They are all essentially the same mechanism as a water bong though, so if you know how one of those works, imagine it shrunken down to pipe size.
