For a couple of years I started learning to play the guitar but quit my group classes because we never learnt anything except the very very basics, not even how to tune. I'm desperate to learn though and was wondering if anyone knew of any good, free websites for beginners I could use to teach myself. I have both an acoustic and electric guitar. Thanks!
Here's what's up. I learned how to play on my own. Find a song you like, and find the tabs online. Just do a google search. Learn tons of songs. (Play the song on some speakers, look at the tabs, and play along until you can play it all the way thru) after a few years, you'll start making up your own stuff and learning new techniques. I now teach guitar, and am a session guitar player in the studio. Great money, and great fun. Just play every day!
I agree with stalk thats how ive learned. You will get better the more you practice. Just play at first it will sound crappy but the more you mess around the better it will sound.
as much tab as you use, remember that your main tool is your ear, then perhaps you will be able to produce your own tab!
Tabs are all well and good, but I would recommend seeing a teacher for a handful of lessons. It will save you hours of trial and error, and also encourage you to get serious and play because you are paying for it! What tabs cannot teach you is technique and timing and basic theory. I am a guitar teacher myself and suggest you try www.acousticguitar.com for starters. It's an excellent site, and last time I looked had some free lessons, which were among the best I have seen on the web.
What worked for me is this: Learn your basic open chords first. Then move onto your barre chords. Then start learning some scales (blues pentatonic) all across the fret board. Get comfy with that.. This is all stuff you can learn on your own by a simple google search. After you're comfortable with that, then I'd get some lessons... I used a "blues" approach because it fits in well with the style of music I like to play, that being, almost any rock from the 60s all the way through till today, grunge, psychadelic, etc etc etc etc... Good luck...
