Hello ! I am a norwegian girl thinking of buying a used van in the US or Canada and living on the road for ..well.. forever.. I dont know.. yet..
But when I was in the States last time I couldnt even get a phone subscription without a Social security number, so I am wondering if buying a car will be difficult?

Also, european citizens have a max stay of 3 months, can I go to Canada and then start on three more months after that?

Any tips on roadtrippin is higly appreciated!

    Hugs
    Silje

    Hey Silje,

I'm a french guy thinking of doing the same thing as you. I think that to buy a car you will at least need a US address you can use to register it and for insurance and stuff.
Let me know if you want to exchange email addresses to share info etc :)

Buying from a private seller with cash should present no problems. You might have an issue registering it though.

Just stay illegal indefinitely. Everyone else seems to do it. Especially if you're going to be on the road...no what I mean?

You need a social security number to buy anything over $750.00 from a licensed dealer because it has to be reported to the IRS. There was a time when drug dealers would walk into a Lexus dealership with a grocery bag full of cash and try to buy a car. So now all major purchases are reported. Heh, like you'll get a drug dealer to pay taxes on that shit...

Buying a vehicle isn't really the problem, as Ramble pointed out. You can't register a vehicle in your name without a local driver's license, and you can't get a driver's license without proof of a local fixed address. And you can't insure a vehicle that is not titled and registered in your name.

There are ways around all of this, I'm sure, I've just never investigated them.

Just drive safe and slow. I've only gotten 1 driving ticket my whole life about 5 years ago...so if you are a 'fuck it' kind of person, Silje, just buy private, take the chance and drive.

If you get a ticket, so what? If you get multiple tickets I would just call it a day and head out on foot.
