After reading the chanting thread I gave Om Mani Padme Hum a try. I really dug it! Should I be kneeling in a dark room? Sitting lotus? What do y'all think is the best way to get the most out of it. Please be specific with me. Thanks ladies and gents!
seriously man..seriously.. you should do what you dig.. Like,I mean.. pick what feels good, and keep it goin' on.. 'Cause what would work for someone else..may not work for you..or what works for you,may not work for them..and so fore and so on.. do you think its good tho, to share a chant with others..like,I mean man.. then they know the same chant as you and its not like special..no more. for example the 'om'..chant is really popular..well I dont do that..'cause its shared and it aint special.. your chant..should be your own and have a groovy or special or something, meaning to you.. and dont share it with others..man.. signed-- N.H.J. No, disrespect. But, if it's a very private thing for you great. I really don't see it like that. I actually find power in the fact that there's many people doing this same chant. A real unity thing. I realize what works for me works for me. But, I was wondering what worked for others. Thanks for your kind words.
i have tried different chants, christian, buddhist and hindu although i feel that the most powerful one ive used was when i meditated on world peace day. Just chanting peace within, peace without, i felt as if i was connected with the other thousadns meditating and praying for peace, i felt that my positive energy was in a way going to those in need. It come down to whatever makes you happy, live for the moment.
In Hinduism chanting is done in various modes. A group chanting is known as Sankirtan or Kirtan, private repitition is called Japa. Both are very good, both serve different functions.
Half lotus is wonderful or just cross legged. Place your attention on middle of your brow and keep it there. Use which ever mantra you would like. I enjoy inhaling with 'So' and exhaling with 'Hum' mainly because its simple, powerful and quite a number of others are doing it worldwide.... and it just feels great after about 3 or 4 minutes. When thoughts come return to the breath. Namaste
That was exactly what I was looking for. Thanks to everyone by the way. I'm glad to be part of such a great forum!
Portal guy, you should use sukhasana, which basically means, a comfotrable posture. Be it kneeling, sitting cross legged, on a chair or in lotus or half lotus, its all fine, just so long as your body is comfortable. Also try and ake sure your back and neck are straight. Chanting can be done anywhere anytime. The point of repeating a mantra is to focus the mind. Therefore when you need the mind to attend to work, use it. When it is free, return to the mantra. That way your energies are not wasted on useless thoughts. Try and focus the mind on the mantra more and more and more and more. The more you do this, the more you can focus in meditation, the better your meditation will be and spiritual growth will be faster. May the infinite lord awake within us all. Hari Om!
NAMASTE As my Teacher from India says chanting done with a pure heart or mind is fuel for the mantra. In Love and Light Pritam
