shit i sliced my finger two hours ago with a big butcher knife while opening a coconut for making curry. but i wrapped a bandaid around the bleeding wound. Now i unwrapp the bandaid and theres a black gash underneath the wound. the top half of fingernail is cracked and a caved downwards a lil. any help on preventing permanent scarring and fingernail weirdness? my friend showed me a permanent scar from a similar knife and it looks weird.

I cut my finger all the way down to the bone on a hunting knife. I just dropped some Neosporin on that bitch and wrapped a Band-Aid around it and let it heal. For some reason, there was no scar. I also had a toe injury and my nail fell off. If your finger nail turns purple and is brittle, it's going to fall off. Don't worry it regrows though. On a side note, I'm really blasted so...that might have not made sense. I'd revise it but I'm high.

so, where did you cut it? if your nail is black/ bent you'll have to wait for it to grow out.

if i were you i would:
pull apart the sides of the wound
clean it very well (should have been done pre- bandaid)
put neosporin on the OUTSIDE! its not supposed to go into a cut, just the outside surface
bandaid the wound closed. so put the first baindaid perpendicular to the cut, and pull it so the sides of the gash are together, otherwise it won't heal right.
and try to keep it immobilized. you can stretch it after it heals.

PS: i am not a doctor, but i enjoy knowing how to do first aid. ;)

if in a few days ifu it hurts real bad and you can feel it pulsating theres built up pressure and a possible infection....in which case you will need to cut the nail back to relieve the pressure

soooo.....DONT READ THIS IS YOU EASILY GET GROSSED OUT:

My dad cut his finger to the bone doing some construction type accident, and he just TPed it, then duct taped it, then like 2 weeks later, he took it off, and squeezed his fingered and all this DISGUSTING neon green shit oozed out of his finger, enough to fill like a 1/4 of a dixie cup, it made me nearly throw up trying to it all out for him and re-bandage it, now he has no feeling in that finger tip. SOoooo I second everyone else that say to clean it out really well!!!

Sounds nasty! I like to cook for my friends... a few monthes ago I had some peeps over, a few steaks on the grill, and I was dicing some onions to saute... had smoked some bubble hash earlier and had a few beers, so I was pretty tipsy. Ended up missing the onion and slicing all the skin on one of my knuckles off... I justed looked at it, laughed, and yelled "FUCK! I cut myself... CHECK THIS SHIT OUT!".... I think someone else finished cooking, I totally needed stiches but lune is far to gangster for health insurance so I just put on some neosporin, wrapped it up, and got to drinkin...

Stitches are overrated, super glue or duct tape work just as well. You know how the saying goes, if you can't Duct it Fuck it.
