I have "baby" dreads, and I want to dye my hair dark brown or black again, but I don't know how to go about this. I used to dye my hair with boxed colors and almost all of them included conditioner. Can you successfully dye your hair without using the conditioner? Does it matter? And how do you know all the color has gone through your dreads? When you apply it, do you take each dread and lather it in the dye? If not, how else would you do it? Is it bad to dye dreads? The reason I want to dye my hair is because my roots are coming in like crazy, and the blonde in my hair is kind of all over the place and really shitty looking. I should have dyed it before I dreaded it, but the roots weren't that bad before. My hair is naturally dark brown, by the way.
if u dye it you will have to continue dying it as they grow or you'll always have the problemn if yiu really want to dye id suggest dying it to as close to natural as u can or..use lemon juice to lighten it to near natural; lemon juice acts like peroxide. dip a dread in lemmon juice blow dry it each time u do it willget lifghter if u dont mind continuealy dring your haitr the resy of uour life u can do it without the conditioner it mayu not lsst as long and maybe more dammaging..dying dammages hair thats why they give u an extra heavy conditioner to try repairing some oif ther dammage take close pics letrs see just how big adifference there is i thijnk your best bet though is stripping aay the existing dye to get to natural but gently as to not do too much dammagfe like bleaching would
I bleached the living daylights out the last 4 inches of my hair and dyed them blue. The dye was supposed to be semi-permanent (15 washes or something) but it went after about 4. The bleach has kind of taken on a cool graduated effect where dark unbleached hair has dreaded over it. If the dye comes with one of them separate conditioners then just don't use it, although I'm sure I've been told that dying hair is kind of good for it in general (dying bleached hair that is) Also if you want to be fancy you can get the components of dye at salon provisioners (sally?) and get some online tutorial. I seem to remember you can also get these quite expensive power dyed that chemically bond to your hair, but they are intended for dying vivid colours onto dark hair without bleaching. Also when I did mine I got my sister to do it with a sort of combination of tint brush and mashing it in with her (gloved) hand and just kept doing it till we assumed it was done, but this takes a while and may screw up your development time, also as I said the hairs wont really stay put and the colouring will kind of fade up the dread. Now some girl can come and tell you I'm wrong and give you a real answer. Them whats educated in the field of hair care take there craft rather seriously in my experience.
nah dying i have never heard was good for your hair its slightly possible there is a particular type that maybe if its made from some natural vewgtabkle sources but the typical chemical dies are damaginf 1 girl here got great results dying her dreads with kool aide ..mix the packet with a lil water to make a paste smear it in good as u can..waut a bit n rince out (gert the unsweetrened without adding sugar or u will be a fly magnet) it colored briliantly if u want funkidelic colords but didnt need bleachinf i doubt they lasted too long though few weeks oir a minth or 2
Just dye it with some henna. I did it when my dreads started getting too bleached out from using lemon as a cleanser. There's this brand called Light Mountain Naturals. I used the dark brown color and it turned out completely natural-looking. They also have black. It's really easy to use, but it made my hair smell like hay for a week. And it conditions the hair on it's own, not like using that super-concentrated shit that comes in conventional hair dye boxes. I'd suggest giving it a try over anything else because it's not permanent and fades evenly over time.
a while ago i wrote a bit about bleaching and using crazy color/special effects to create wacky dreads, but i didnt include any info on single process, which is dying your whole head one color. FOR DREADS/HAIR TO BE DYED DARKER THAN NATURAL HAIRCOLOR ONLY because dreads are so packed, you will not be able to get to the core of the dread, which doesnt matter. the idea is to make one uniform color, which is very easy. buy a box of natural instincts hair color. it has only 10% peroxide, making it the kindest to your hair. I would buy two boxes, as dreads soak up a lot of color. buy a color ONE SHADE DARKER THAN WHAT YOU WANT. i never recommend black, as black doesnt fade, it shows dirt and dandruff and is in general really harsh on the skintone. please be advised that it is very difficult to remove permanent color from dreads, so pic a reasonble color. (browns). mix it up per the directions, coat each dread in the color. leave it on for 20 minutes. then put the rest of the color on your roots. wait until 30 minutes, then rinse. rinse rinse rinse A LOT. shampoo with NON CONDITIONING shampoo. do not condition hair. thats it. when your roots grow in, they probably will not match the rest of your hair. so buy a box of the same color and put the product ONLY ON THE ROOTS. do not coat the dread EVER AGAIN. because of the kind of shampoos we use on our dreads being so abrasive, do not expect your hair to stay the shade you chose. it will lighten up. i would not recommend henna for this reason. it fades unevenly and you will be back to square one. my dreads are feria golden truffle. my roots are the same. its not a big deal to do your roots, i do them every 6 or so weeks. any other question concerning coloring you can email me kikioreekee@sbcglobal.net
My hair has been dyed all sorts of colors for years (blue, pink, purple, red, orange, blonde, black, etc.) and I don't think I'll go back to black, because it's impossible to remove (and it's all gone, finally!). I'm thinking I'll go back to my regular hair color, dark brown, so my hair matches my roots. I just want to cover up the gross blonde that is growing out and making me look very shabby. Thanks for the advice everyone, I'll probably dye it this weekend and post pictures in my dread thread afterwards.
ive heard that to dye dreads you just really really work the stuff in, and you really really really wash it out again, several times to make sure its all gone =] that said, i havent tried to dye mine, though ive thought about it..
going back to naturals a good idea alternately u could use lemin juice and sunlight to give it a alklk around highlighted look dreads that are naturaly brown but grow out with a touch of sun bleaching i think look amazing
