Title says it all. I going to be moving into an apartment soon but I'm worried that they might monitor the electric considering they pay it. So that's my situation. Thanks for your help.
not likely. some glass would be fine - take a greenhouse for instance. but most, if not all, regular windows will be made to prevent certain portions of the light getting through, specifically UV rays. this wont affect visibility, but UV rays are important for resin production, if i'm not mistaken. there may be other reasons why it wont work well. further the life cycle of the plant is VERY much regulated by the photoperiod. that is, how much light it gets in a 24 hour period. even if the light it gets from your indoor lighting at night when you're at home isn't enough to make the plant grow, exposure to it at night is enough to fuck up your plant. essentially anything brighter than the moon must be avoided during the plant's "night" time. basically if you're able to grow anything at all, it will be virtually unsmokable. if you cant grow indoors, which is a bad idea in any apartment, you could definitely consider going guerilla outdoors somewhere. best pot in the world is often grown from the sun's own light....everything else just tries to mimic the sun as well as possible
you can, but you will yield nothing come harvest time. you plant will stretch, and be stressed. your electricity bill wont be real high with one good light. if your paranoid, conserve energy. though i don't think growing in an apartment is a good idea.
i agree, its a bad and risky idea. as for energy conservation....apparently they have a long way to go in developing the technology, but there are now usable LED grow lights on the market. they're expensive to invest in, and will surely be obsolete once the technology is better. but there is a model out i read about which is supposed to be comparable in quality to a 400watt HID lamp, costs very, very little to operate, and stays very cool compared to HIDs, which is a good safety feature as well as meaning you can get it a lot closer to the plants and get better results. this is all from a very interested nongrower, though. either way, i think an apartment grow is generally a very bad idea, and simply putting it by a window won't work well at all. you could grow a plant, but you wont get anything anywhere close to the effort...
I too agree with this.......growing in an apartment is VERY risky! This is true, they are TRYING to bring LED's into the picture and are coming up with some amazing results! But at the moment, if you are trying to grow on a budget....CFL's outweigh LED's by a mile just because of cost. Well this is O.K. but really with a properly cooled hood/cool-tube you can get the bulb just as close with a 400W HPS. Granted your paying more in electricity but i think the added lumens are worth it. No matter who it's from.......you sir, have done your research! An apartment grow isn't really a great idea. SO many things can happen to comprimise the grow............you can grow by a window but don't epect anything dry over a 1/4oz.. Your best bet is to either do outdoors or take the plunge and spend alittle cash and do an indoor grow.
the problem with outdoor growing or growing via an outside light source (a window, sunroof, glass door, etc) is that your plants will have a season. this is because a plant 'knows' when to bud because the hours of daylight become less than the hours of night. basically plants do this so their seeds will last until the begining of the next growing season. (detatched seeds have a year tops to still be good.)
other than the above, outdoor weed is the shit. nothing compares to gods herb under gods great growlamp.
