Should I try again if my hair is pretty damaged?

Long story short, I let someone do my dreads for me. It was supposed to be backcombing, but it wasn't really done right... it was just very loose brush combing and rolling with a lotta goop (thank god it wasn't actual wax, it WAS water soluble). Well everything went fine and dandy until at the 2 week mark I barely rinsed my dreads just so I could clean my scalp, and the entire job fell out. Now see, this ended up being worse than the "natural" method because of how she did it, basically my entire head started to mat up instead of just dreads on their own. So I had to comb it all out, which took 2 weeks, and I lost nearly 50% of my hair's total volume. What is left, is very damaged, dry, tangles and therefore breaks easy when I try to brush it, etc. I originally dreaded my hair to attempt to get away from having to do anything with my hair, especially brushing it.

Well now brushing and all that normal stuff is worse than it ever was... my hair's length comes down to the top of my ass crack (undreaded) so it is very difficult to handle. It's still as long as it ever was after combing them out, there's just only half as much as there was before. and I want dreads, still. I'm just afraid to try again. And that goes for either back combing or natural. The reason being, if my hair is this badly damaged, what if it can't hold up to either back combing, or the natural ripping of those who get too big if I go natural? I'm afraid if I do end up with dreads, they will break off easy or something. I guess what I am wondering is, can your hair ever be too damaged for dreads, and if so, at what point do you have to say "no, it needs to grow out for a few years first"?

when i got rid of my last lot of dreads, my remaining hair went REALLY thin, it was horrible, but after a few washes and a few months, the volume was back and it was really thick again. i think you just need to give it a bit of time and some lurve =]
