Hey I have 3 plants in my spare bedroom. They are all protected, 4 feet high, proper LEGAL ventilation (I have a license to grow) anyways... they still have 4 weeks left before they are complete. All of a sudden, there is this Musty Smell. I don't know if it because I watered them too much? All the buds are glistening. There is no sign of bugs or anything so where is the smell coming from? They are in 1.5 foot round pots. Is it possible there is something wrong with the earth or I am not letting them dry out enough? I am scared that mold might be forming in the earth? There is nothing on my plants and the humidity/temp is 45/78. My plants are the perfect shade of green and I make sure when I feed them there is enough nutrients and the perfect PH. The room is ventilated with a huge 60lb ventilation drum which is automatic when the temperature gets too high. The 3 plants are also under a 600 H light with 2 circulation fans I have never had this happen before but then again I haven't grown in 5 years. Someone please let me know if there is something wrong here? thanks
Do you normally the smell increase after the lights go out? It is normal. Kind of a green breath going ahhhhhh. Sometimes it can be pretty skunky As the plants ripen and mature increased odors will appear. Different strains produce different odors, some big some small. Mold aka bud rot and powdery mildew are the main worry. For bud rot the insides of the buds will turn into a soft blackish mush. Powdery Mildew will be more on the leaves but will spread and kill (not a big smell generator though). But with your temps/humidity and ventilation it does not seem probable unless you are misting them. You can rot the stems and do some major root rot by not allowing for a dry/wet cycle when watering. The old rule of thumb is to jab your index finger in the soil until the second knuckle and if it comes out dry it is time to water. I think you are fine. That said be sure to inspect the buds for mold and the leaves for mildew (powdery). Hope this helps! Bill
I know I have watered before they were FULLY dry so this is very bad now? I cannot explain the smell we are smelling. Its VERY musty but the leaves and buds look WONDERFUL!!! I should take a photo and show you. This is hawaiian Skunk weed and I would have thought it would smell like shunk. When you press your fingers around the buds it smells fine but when you walk in the room, its this heavy musty smell. I haven't found any mold or what you are talking about so I have no idea what to do. Should I retransplant them into larger buckets eventhough there is only 4 weeks left? I will try and find my camera and take a closeup of the buds. There is glistening fur all over the buds but I know that's a good thing.. or at least I hope!! LOL
It sounds like every thing has been done correctly. I reread that the exhaust fan only comes on when the temps get too high. You really should have fresh air exchange in the room ~ 5 minutes <- that could be the source. You might just be blowing stagnant air around. 4 weeks left - no do not transplant them. After harvest you might want to check the room itself for mold or mildew - just in case. Some skunk strains do reek just like a skunk - baaaaad. Some are not that bad. As long as everything has checked out fine leaves/buds you should be ok. -B
Ok.. so the leaves should have the fur on them? Crystal like fur? I tried to take a photo and its not very clear but I will attach the photo here for you to look next post
My wife's father built a portable room 6x6 that is in our spare bedroom. It has the 4 walls so it gets circulated air from within the large room. Here is the best photo I could take. With the light on the photo is not that clear. I really need a new camera, lol Let me know what this is on my leaves.... I hope its not bad news!!!http://www.ssb9.net/users/36470/bud.jpg
They appear fine to me. You may be having "expectant mother syndrome" If you have a Radio Shack nearby they have a small portable microscope ~ $10 and you will be able to see the bulbous trichome heads. -B
I think you havent smelled real growing Marijuana for a while and dont remember it smells like someones dog just shit in the livingroom..sometimes.
Sounds like mold, and there are more reasons than this to keep air exchange going at all times. Fresh air (from outside the house) contains stuff plants need to grow big n strong;>)
I have full size rooms if you close the doors it will smell moldy and musky in there due to the humidity and heat. Really its nasty and smells like a old basement in the second floor of the home.. Keep air circulating and allow outside air in as "Naturalhi" says
Are you sure the smell isn't coming from somewhere else? Is there some way you could check? Maybe they're sitting on carpet?
mike, since you live in australia, id suggest you dontget your hopes too high. from what i heard, marijuana offenses thier are MASSIVE crimes with jaltime and big charges. the way to grow legally is under a medical license which can only be gained with relative ease by canadians and some US states (and likely some european nations-im not up to date there). In canada this license is as easy as some forms and a doctor's verification that your illness is one that could be treated/pain-relieved by marijuana usage.
