I'm sorry this isn't exactly a "vegetarian" issue, but there really isn't a good place for plain health-food related questions on this site & most of the people here DO seem to be at least somewhat concerned about eating "right."

I make "Cheerio" bars about 3-4 times per year for my kids. It's a special treat, and we'll have them in lieu of breakfast once & then finish the pan as bedtime snacks over the course of a week or so. This morning we were making a pan to go with our breakfast tea, and as I grabbed for the ingredients, I had this odd feeling. Sure enough, Karo syrup is straight HFCS... something we've been working hard on eliminating from our diets.

Does anyone know of a suitable substitute? (I was wondering if maybe that agave nectar everyone raves about might work?) It's not something I use often as these bars are the ONLY thing we ever use it in, but I'd really like to find something else since the kids absolutely love these. And heck, if I can find a HEALTHY alternative - maybe we could have them just a bit more often?
    love,

brown rice syrup or barley malt syrup can be substituted for the Karo syrup....

Oh, thank you SO much!!! I have some GF brown rice syrup in the fridge!

I knew there had to be something out there, but I couldn't think of what it might be. (sigh) Someday I am going to catch ALL of the things I'm missing, right?
    love,
