don't you think escapism is quite dangerouse? it sounds to me like that is why you play your games what with the
"truly sink into the undiverse they give you"

What's the difference between that and reading a good book or watching an absorbing movie?

Oh right, just noticed you're a christian. That explains that particular prejudice then.

    what truth?

*edit* but yes escapism through a book or film or whatever is your thing is fun... just as long as it dosnt intrude on your real life too much i guess

I don't think it's dangerous at all, I think it's qite healthy, to be able to ignore all your problems for a couple of hours... sure, the problems are still going to be there once you've finished, but at least you're not worrying about them while you're playing, and we all know worry causes stress...

As has been said, I don't see my sinking into the game any diffrent to sinking into diffrent to sinking into a good book, a movie, heck even sinking into good music...

Not that I want to turn this into anything to do with religion, but would someone be kind enough to explain why christans right now like the idea of escapism?

    Thx

It's all a case of knowing the diffrence between reality and fantasy...

I enjoy playing GTA: Vice City, I go around driving like a loony, running people over, killing people, stealing their money, and all for no reason other than 'because I can'... but that does not mean I want to do the same once I've finished playing... I know the diffrence between reality and fantasy, and so I act in a way fitting to both.

MMORPGs are slightly diffrent, but the same is still true - sure, I sink into the environment provided to me, but once the session is over, i come back to reality.

Like Claire here said, nothing wrong with it, provided you don't let it take over.

Now in all fairness, I may be jumping to conclusions and this may not be representative of Peppy's opinion at all, but many xtians have big problems with anything related to fantasy. The argument is essentially that all supernatural forces originate from either god or satan. Therefore magic, as portrayed in fantasy, not originating from god, must therefore originate from the devil. As a result, they see any work of fiction (game, book, movie) that portrays 'good' magic as a cunning ploy to cast supernatural forces that really originate from satan in a positive light. By losing yourself in a fantasy world, it therefore follows that you're being seduced by satanic forces. There's many variations of this insane logic, but that's the basics.

Depends what they see as magic... real magic is just an ancient form of what we would call a prayer these days...

I guess role play games aren't meaning the old ways though... but a fantasy based on them

I'm actually changing my mind a little on role play... i think it could be fun:) I'm glad I posted this thread! hahaha

    Love Clairexxx

damn right, their nuts, you walk to co-op and they all shout stop, and then some elf shouts "hello joel!" and im like...ooooooookkkkk

i've got nothing against escapism, its just well, if you need to escape that much from your life then you should take a look at your life really...

    but each to their own...

We've already gone over this. Were you not listening Mr Spyder?:p

Sinking into a book, good music or a film is just as much a type of escapism... just different.

So bearing that in mind and your love of literature....

For a moment then I thought you might be talking about 'Magic: The Gathering', but seeing as that's a Trading Card Game, I guess not.

    Any Magic fans here?
